Abstract

Keratin and derivatives thereof, preferably S-sulfonated keratin intermediate filament protein, S-sulfonated keratin high sulfur protein, and S-sulfonated peptides provide antioxidant activity, e.g., that equal to 200-2200 μmol TEAC/100 g or 100 ml, and are useful in an oral supplement to cause reduction in oxidative stress and benefits stemming therefrom, e.g., promoting skin health and to provide anti-inflammatory effect.

Claims (11)

1. An oral supplement or nutraceutical composition comprising from 0.1 to 99.9% by weight of a S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent, and at least one of from 40 to 90% by weight cellulose or derivative thereof, from 15 to 60% by weight starch or derivative thereof, from 15 to 60% by weight starch and derivative thereof, from 2 to 95% sweetener, from 0.1 to 60% Vitamin C or from 2 to 15% sodium sulfite.

2. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent comprises keratin intermediate filament protein.

3. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 2 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is intact.

4. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 2 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is hydrolyzed.

5. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent comprises High Sulfur Protein (HSP).

6. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 5 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is intact.

7. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 5 wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is hydrolyzed.

8. A method for preparing an oral supplement or nutraceutical composition comprising formulating a S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent with at least one of cellulose or derivative thereof, starch or derivative thereof, sweetener or sodium sulfite.

9. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the oral supplement or nutraceutical composition is a mixture of the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent and the at least one of cellulose or derivative thereof, starch or derivative thereof, starch and derivative thereof, sweetener, Vitamin C or sodium sulfite.

10. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is intact.

11. The oral supplement or nutraceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the S-sulfonated keratin protein fraction nutraceutical agent is hydrolyzed.
