Abstract

Wastewater treatment systems and processes for removal of solids, pathogens, nitrogen, and phosphorus from municipal and agricultural wastewater include the simultaneous separation of solids and phosphorus from wastewater and industrial effluents.

Claims (16)

1. A system for treating wastewater comprising:

a. a raw wastewater stream in fluid communication with a homogenization tank, a solid separation unit and a phosphorus separation reactor unit,

b. said solid separation unit in fluid communication with said homogenization tank,

c. a denitrification unit in direct fluid communication with a clarified effluent of said solid separation unit,

d. a nitrification unit in fluid communication with said denitrification unit, and

e. said phosphorus separation reactor unit in fluid communication with a liquid effluent from said nitrification unit and in fluid communication with said raw wastewater stream, wherein said system is a simultaneous operation producing one stream of solids.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a clarification unit in fluid communication with said nitrification unit and said phosphorus unit.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein a polymer flocculant is used in said solid separation unit to clump suspended solids in a manure/phosphorus sludge mixture.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein said polymer flocculant is selected from the group consisting of a cationic polyacrylamide, cationic polyethlyemimine, chitosan, polysaccharides, and mixtures thereof.

5. A process comprising:

a. providing two fluid streams to form a mixture of a manure sludge and a phosphorus sludge,

b. Treating said mixture with a polymer flocculant to separate solids in said mixture to form a single solid stream and an effluent stream,

c. Treating said effluent stream to remove nitrogen by a denitrification process and a nitrification process to form a nitrified effluent stream,

d. Treating said nitrified effluent stream to precipitate phosphorus to form a phosphorus precipitate sludge and a treated effluent,

e. cycling said phosphorus precipitate sludge to a homogenization tank to form said mixture of a manure sludge and phosphorus precipitate sludge.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein said polymer flocculant is selected from the group consisting of a cationic polyacrylamide, cationic polyethlyemimine, chitosan, polysaccharides, and mixtures thereof.
