Abstract

A clutch actuator comprises a clutch motor comprising motor shaft. The clutch actuator also comprises a worm shaft that is spline connected to the motor shaft. The rotary motion of the worm shaft 103 is transferred to a worm wheel 105 , which is engaged with the worm shaft 103 . The worm shaft 103 has a threaded portion 103 c . The threaded portion 103 c comprises multiple threads.

Claims (27)

1. A clutch actuator for actuating a multi-plate friction clutch, the clutch actuator comprising:

a motor including a motor shaft arranged to rotate about a first axis;

a worm shaft including a threaded portion and being arranged to rotate about the first axis;

a worm wheel in engagement with the threaded portion of the worm shaft;

an output rod having an elongated axis defining an axial direction, the output rod arranged to move in the axial direction to engage and disengage the multi-plate friction clutch; and

a crankshaft arranged to connect the worm wheel to the output rod such that a rotary motion of the worm wheel is transformed to a reciprocating motion of the output rod; wherein

the worm wheel is axially spaced from the output rod along an axial direction of the crankshaft;

the threaded portion of the worm shaft includes three or more threads.

2. The clutch actuator according to claim 1 , wherein the worm wheel rotates through a rotation angle of more than about 90 degrees when the clutch actuator moves from a clutch engaged position to a clutch disengaged position.

3. The clutch actuator according to claim 2 , further comprising a rotation angle sensor and a controller, wherein the rotation angle sensor is arranged to measure the rotation angle of the worm wheel, and the controller is arranged to control the motor based upon measurements from the rotation angle sensor.

4. An engine unit comprising:

an engine including a clutch; wherein

the clutch is connected to the clutch actuator of claim 1 .

5. A saddle-type vehicle comprising:

the engine unit of claim 4 .

6. An engine comprising:

a multi-plate friction clutch; and

a clutch actuator including:

a motor including a motor shaft arranged to rotate about a first axis;

a worm shaft including a threaded portion and being arranged to rotate about the first axis;

a worm wheel in engagement with the threaded portion of the worm shaft;

an output rod having an elongated axis defining an axial direction, the output rod arranged to move in the axial direction to engage and disengage the multi-plate friction clutch; and

a crankshaft connecting the worm wheel to the output rod such that a rotary motion of the worm wheel is transformed to a reciprocating motion of the output rod; wherein

the threaded portion of the worm shaft includes multiple threads; and

the worm wheel shaft is arranged to rotate the worm wheel through a rotation angle of more than about 90 degrees when the clutch actuator moves from a clutch engaged position to a clutch disengaged position.

7. The engine according to claim 6 , wherein the threaded portion of the worm shaft includes three or more threads.

8. The clutch actuator according to claim 7 , further comprising a rotation angle sensor and a controller, wherein the rotation angle sensor is arranged to measure the rotation angle of the worm wheel, and the controller is arranged to control the motor based upon measurements from the rotation angle sensor.
