Abstract

Systems and methods for contacting a crude feed with one or more catalysts produces a total product that include a crude product are described. The crude product is a liquid mixture at 25° C. and 0.101 MPa. The one or more catalysts may include one or more vanadium catalysts. Methods and compositions of the one or more vanadium catalysts are described. One or more properties of the crude product may be changed by at least 10% relative to the respective properties of the crude feed. In some embodiments, hydrogen is generated.

Claims (26)

1. A method of producing a crude product, comprising:

contacting a crude feed with one or more catalysts to produce a total product that includes the crude product, wherein the crude product is a liquid mixture at 25° C. and 0.101 MPa, and the crude feed has a total acid number (TAN) of at least 0.1;

wherein at least one of the catalysts comprises vanadium, one or more compounds of vanadium, or mixtures thereof and an additional catalyst comprising one or more metals from Columns 5-6 of the Periodic Table, one or more compounds from one or more metals from Columns 5-6 of the Periodic Table, or mixtures thereof and wherein hydrogen is generated during contacting of the crude feed and the vanadium catalyst; and

controlling contacting conditions such that the crude product has a TAN of at most 90% of the TAN of the crude feed, wherein TAN is as determined by ASTM Method D664.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein hydrogen is generated at a rate in a range from about 1 to about 20 normal cubic meters per cubic meter of crude feed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contacting conditions are also controlled such that at least one of the catalysts uptakes at least a portion of the generated hydrogen.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein and the contacting conditions are also controlled such that the crude feed uptakes at least a portion of the generated hydrogen.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein contacting comprises contacting the crude feed with the vanadium catalyst at a first temperature and subsequently with the additional catalyst at a second temperature, and the contacting conditions are also controlled such that the first temperature is at least 30° C. lower than the second temperature.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more catalysts comprise:

at least one catalyst comprising vanadium, one or more compounds of vanadium, or mixtures thereof;

an additional catalyst comprising one or more metals from Columns 5-6 of the Periodic Table, one or more compounds from one or more metals from Columns 5-6 of the Periodic Table, or mixtures thereof; and

a second additional catalyst comprising one or more metals from Columns 6-10 of the Periodic Table, one or more compounds from one or more metals from Columns 6-10 of the Periodic Table, or mixtures thereof.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises providing a gas during contacting, and the contacting conditions are also controlled such that a flow of the gas is counter to a flow of the crude feed.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises providing a gas during contacting, and the contacting conditions are also controlled such that a flow of the gas is concurrent to a flow of the crude feed.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein contacting comprises contacting the crude feed with the additional catalyst, in the presence of a gas comprising hydrogen, light hydrocarbons, inert gas, or mixtures thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the TAN of the crude product is in a range from about 1% to about 80% of the TAN of the crude feed.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the TAN of the crude product is in a range from about 0.001 to about 0.5.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the TAN of the crude feed is in a range from about 0.3 to about 20.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises combining the crude product with a crude that is the same as or different from the crude feed to form a blend suitable for transportation and/or treatment facilities.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of producing a transportation fuel, comprising:

processing a crude product, wherein the crude product is obtainable by:

contacting a crude feed with one or more catalysts to produce a total product that includes the crude product, wherein the crude product is a liquid mixture at 25° C. and 0.101 MPa, and the crude feed has a total acid number (TAN) of at least 0.1;

wherein at least one of the catalysts comprises vanadium, one or more compounds of vanadium, or mixtures thereof and wherein hydrogen is generated during contacting of the crude feed and the vanadium catalyst; and

controlling contacting conditions such that the crude product has a TAN of at most 90% of the TAN of the crude feed, wherein TAN is as determined by ASTM Method D664.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the processing comprises distilling the crude product into one or more distillate fractions.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the processing comprises hydrotreating.
