Abstract

A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. Elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

Claims (24)

1. A display, comprising:

a spatial light modulator;

a diffuser; and

a lighting mechanism comprising a plurality of light sources configured to emit light to pass through the diffuser and onto the spatial light modulator;

wherein the light source and diffuser are together configured so as to cause a light spread function having a full width at half maximum in a range of 0.3×d2 to 3×d2 where d2 is a center-to-center spacing between at least two of the plurality of light sources.

2. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the display comprises a high dynamic range (HDR) display having a contrast ratio of greater than 800:1.

3. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the lighting mechanism further comprises at least two rows of light sources.

4. The display according to claim 3 , wherein the lighting mechanism further comprises at least two columns of light sources.

5. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the lighting mechanism further comprises at least two columns of light sources.

6. The display according to claim 5 , wherein the light sources of each row are equally spaced and the light sources of each column are equally spaced.

7. The display according to claim 1 , wherein a resolution of the spatial light modulator is much higher than a resolution of the lighting mechanism, and the spatial light modulator is configured to be energized in a manner that causes a reduction in artifacts in an image to be displayed, the artifacts being due to the disparity in resolutions between the spatial light modulator and the lighting mechanism.

8. The display according to claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to energize the spatial light modulator according to an image signal comprising a desired image to be displayed in a manner that reduces artifacts due to a disparity in resolution between the lighting mechanism and the spatial light modulator.

9. The display according to claim 8 , wherein the controller is further configured to energize the backlight according to the image signal.

10. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of light sources are configured to be illuminated at varying light intensities.

11. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the lighting mechanism is off-axis and to at least one side of the spatial light modulator.

12. The display according to claim 1 , wherein the lighting mechanism comprises at least one light source in a plane perpendicular to a plane of the spatial light modulator.

13. A display comprising backlights configured to project a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator configured to further modulate the pattern of light to produce a desired image, and, a controller configured to produce control signals configured to control the backlight and the spatial modulator according to an image signal comprising the desired image; wherein the control signal configured to control the spatial light modulator comprises signaling configured to reduce artifacts in the desired image that result from differences in pixel sizes between the backlight and the spatial light modulator.

14. The display according to claim 13 , wherein an optical arrangement of the display is configured to reflect light emanating from the backlights in a direction mainly parallel to a plane of the spatial light modulator to a direction mainly perpendicular to the plane of the spatial light modulator.

15. The display according to claim 13 , wherein the backlights are positioned behind and to a side of the spatial light modulator.

16. The display according to claim 13 , wherein the backlight comprises two rows of equally spaced lighting elements having a light spread function with a full width at half maximum in a range of 0.3×d2 to 3×d2 where d2 is a center-to-center spacing between the equally spaced lighting elements.

17. A method, comprising the steps of energizing a backlight at least in part according to an image signal containing a desired image; energizing a spatial light modulator in a manner that modulates light emitted from the backlight so as to produce the desired image comprising an energization that comprises a portion of the image signal and results in a reduction of artifacts which result from pixels of the backlight being in common to a plurality of pixels of the spatial light modulator.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the backlight is in a plane off-axis with respect to a plane of the spatial light modulator.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the backlight comprises two rows of lighting elements.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein an optical arrangement between the backlight and the spatial light modulator, comprising a diffuser, causes light emitted by the lighting elements to mix according to a spread function having a full width at half maximum in a range of 0.3×d2 to 3×d2 where d2 is a center-to-center spacing between at least two of the lighting elements.
