Abstract

An artificial intervertebral disc includes housing members including spaced inner surfaces facing each other and oppositely facing outer surfaces for engaging spaced apart vertebral surfaces. Bearing surfaces extend from each of the inner surfaces for engaging each other while allowing for low friction and compression resistant movement of the housing members relative to each other while under compression. Load sharing pads are disposed between the inner surfaces and about at least a portion of the bearing surfaces for sharing absorption compressive loads with the bearing surfaces while limiting the relative movement of the housing members.

Claims (18)

1. A method of assembling an artificial intervertebral disc in vivo, the method comprising the steps of:

inserting upper and lower housing members into an intervertebral space, each of the upper and lower housing members having an inner surface;

disposing a cushioning pad between the inner surfaces of the housing members in vivo, placing the pad in compression; and

inserting a pair of non-compressible disc members between the inner surfaces of the housing members in vivo, the non-compressible disc members having abutting low friction surfaces therebetween and forming a non-compressible bearing surface between the housing members, the non-compressible disc members being effectively surrounded by the pad the non-compressible disc members sharing compressive forces of the pad while limiting compression of the pad.

2. A method according to claim 1 further including the steps of aligning the housing members relative to each other by adjusting the relative height of the cushioning pad to maintain spinal curvatures.

3. A method according to claim 1 further including the steps of creating a no load condition on the cushioning pad by adjusting the relative heights of the cushioning pad.

4. A method according to claim 1 further including the steps of adjusting the relative range of motion of the housing members by adjusting for relative elasticity of the cushioning pad.

5. A method of separating opposing vertebrae at an intervertebral space, the method comprising the steps of:

engaging artificial non-compressible bearing surfaces between the intervertebral surfaces;

allowing low friction and compression resistant movement of the bearing surfaces relative to each other;

sharing absorption of the compressive forces with at least one load bearing pad disposed about at least a portion of the non-compressible bearing surfaces; and

limiting the relative movement of the bearing surfaces.

6. A method of artificially spacing apart intervertebral surfaces comprising the steps of:

disposing housing members separated by non-compressible bearing surfaces surrounded by a pad member between the intervertebral spaces;

sharing compressive loads between the bearing surfaces and the pad member;

limiting compression of the pad member by the non-compressible bearing surfaces; and

limiting motion of the non-compressible bearing surfaces by the surrounding pad member.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6 further including steps of adjusting the elasticity of the pad member intraoperatively to adjust the extent of movement of the bearing surfaces.
