Abstract

A method for varying the symbols used on a mechanical reel strip are disclosed. A reel strip comprises a plurality of symbols, each of the symbols associated with a symbol group. Each of the symbol groups is associated with a symbol group designation position on the reel strip. By varying the designation position on the reel strip, the symbols used with each reel strip can be modified. When multiple mechanical reels are used in a gaming machine, the symbol designating position for each reel strip can be the same as any other reel strip or can vary from any of the other reel strips. As such, an endless number of games and game variations may be created and deployed.

Claims (28)

1. A method for playing multiple different games on a mechanical reel having a plurality of different starting positions, wherein each starting position is associated with a different subset of reel symbols, the method comprising:

enabling a player to select a first starting position on a reel strip located on the mechanical reel, the first starting position being associated with a first symbol subgroup located on the reel strip;

using the first symbol subgroup as the symbols on the reel strip during play of a first game;

enabling a player to select a second starting position on the reel strip, the second starting position being associated with a second symbol subgroup; and

using the second symbol subgroup as the symbols on the reel strip during play of a second game, wherein the reel includes an encoder disk that positions the reel and locates a symbol group designating position as the starting position for the first symbol subgroup used in a game.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes partially overlapped groups of reel symbols.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes separate, non-overlapping groups of reel symbols.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical reel is connected to a server via a network, and wherein new symbol subgroups are downloadable from the server to generate new games on the mechanical reel using the newly downloaded symbol subgroups.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: covering reel symbols associated with non-selected symbol group during game play with a reel mask positioned over the reel strip.

6. A method for playing multiple different games on a multiple reel gaming device, each mechanical reel having a plurality of different starting positions, wherein each starting position is associated with a different subset of reel symbols, the method comprising:

enabling a player to select a first starting position on a first reel strip located on a first reel, the first starting position being associated with a first symbol subgroup located on the first reel strip;

enabling a player to select a second starting position on a second reel strip located on a second reel, the second starting position being associated with a second symbol subgroup located on the second reel strip; and

using the first symbol subgroup as the symbols on first reel strip and the second symbol subgroup as the symbols on the second reel strip during play of a game wherein each reel includes an encoder disk that positions the reel and locates a symbol group designating position as the starting position for the first symbol subgroup used in a game.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes partially overlapped groups of reel symbols.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes separate, non-overlapping groups of reel symbols.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the gaming device is connected to a server via a network, and wherein new symbol subgroups are downloadable from the server to generate new games on the gaming device using the newly downloaded symbol subgroups.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: covering reel symbols associated with non-selected symbol group during game play with a reel mask positioned over the reel strip.

11. A method for playing multiple different games on a multiple reel gaming device, each mechanical reel having a plurality of different starting positions, wherein each starting position is associated with a different subset of reel symbols, the method comprising:

enabling a player to select a first starting position on a first reel strip located on a first reel, the first starting position being associated with a first symbol subgroup located on the first reel strip;

enabling a player to select a second starting position on a second reel strip located on a second reel, wherein the second starting position on the second reel, the second starting position being associated with a second symbol subgroup located on the second reel strip;

enabling a player to select a third starting position on a third reel strip located on a third reel, wherein the third starting position on the third reel, the third starting position being associated with a third symbol subgroup located on the third reel strip; and

using the first symbol subgroup as the symbols on first reel strip, the second symbol subgroup as the symbols on the second reel strip, and the third symbol subgroup as the symbols on the third reel strip during play of a game wherein each reel includes an encoder disk that positions the reel and locates a symbol group designating position as the starting position for the first symbol subgroup used in a game.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes partially overlapped groups of reel symbols.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first symbol subgroup and the second symbol subgroup includes separate, non-overlapping groups of reel symbols.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the gaming device is connected to a server via a network, and wherein new symbol subgroups are downloadable from the server to generate new games on the gaming device using the newly downloaded symbol subgroups.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: covering reel symbols associated with non-selected symbol group during game play with a reel mask positioned over the reel strip.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the symbols included with each symbol subgroup remain contrast from game to game.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the symbols included with each symbol subgroup remain contrast from game to game.
