Abstract

The present invention includes a method of utilizing four peptide hormones to inhibit the growth of cancer(s). A dramatic decrease in the number of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells (i.e., the type of cancer with the highest mortality, with patients only surviving four months) was observed responsive to treatment. The application of the invention would be to utilize one or more of these peptide hormones alone and/or in combination to treat cancer. The ability of these peptide hormones to decrease the number of adenocarcinoma cells has implications for adenocarcinomas at other sites in the body with the majority of cancers of the breast, colon and prostate also being adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinomas also occur in the lung and other tissues. Treatment of a wide variety of cancers in addition to adenocarcinomas is anticipated by the present invention.

Claims (6)

1. A method of inhibiting the growth of at least one target cancer cell, comprising contacting an effective amount of C-natriuretic peptide (CNP) to at least one target cancer cell.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one target cancer cell is of a cancer type chosen from the group consisting of an adenocarcinoma, small cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount of CNP is administered to at least one target cancer cell in vivo.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the mode of administration of the CNP is chosen from the group consisting of oral, subcutaneous, and intravenous administration.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein said administering comprises co-administering an effective amount of a combination of CNP and a peptide hormone derived from the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) pro-hormone.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the peptide hormone derived from the ANP pro-hormone is selected from the group consisting of long acting natriuretic peptide (LANP), vessel dilator, kaliuretic peptide, and ANP.
