Abstract

An immobilization device and method of restraining vehicles, persons and animals uses tendrils attached to various devices to engage the target. The immobilization device, system and method includes a housing containing launchable tendrils that are launched from the housing by a propellant. The tendrils may be attached to straps or other elements carried by the immobilization device. The tendrils will engage the target and restrain it if it is a vehicle such as a car, truck, boat, submarine, or like vehicle. In stopping a person or animal the tendrils will deliver a marking package, a shocking package or a snare package to mark, shock or snare the target. Straps may be pulled off the housing leaving the housing near the point of deployment.

Claims (26)

1. A method of entangling a target vehicle having a wheel and tire assembly and rotating components on the underside of the vehicle, the method comprising:

providing an entangling device including first and second activation devices, a primary tubular strap having a barb attached to the primary tubular strap, a secondary strap, and first and second pressure generators;

positioning the entangling device along an expected path of the target vehicle to entangle at least one of the wheel and tire assembly and the rotating components;

activating the first activation device to cause the first pressure generator to pressurize the primary tubular strap;

attaching the primary strap to the target by having the barb stick to the tire of the target vehicle;

activating the second pressure generator to cause the second pressure generator to deploy the secondary strap;

attaching the secondary strap to the target vehicle by deploying the secondary strap from the entangling device and having the secondary strap contact; at least one of the wheel and tire assembly and the rotating components; and

releasing at least one of the primary and secondary straps from the entangling device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing a proximity detector that will detect the proximity of the target vehicle and will provide a signal to initiate pressure generation by a second of the pressure generators whereby a frangible ball and an attached tendril are launched from the housing, and the secondary strap attached to the tendril will be drawn into contact with the target vehicle.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of projectiles each attached to a tendril and each projectile and tendril is attached to a at least one secondary strap.

4. The method of claim 3 comprising launching the projectiles and the attached tendrils from the entangling device to the target vehicle and having the tendrils entangled and attached to the target vehicle pull the attached secondary straps into connection with the target vehicle whereby the target vehicle is entangled with the secondary straps.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the secondary straps are attached to the primary straps and the secondary straps pull the primary straps into entangling connection with the target vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising a fracturable element releasing at least one of the primary and secondary straps from the entangling device.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising a manifold coupled to the entangling device by the fracturable element, wherein the fracturable element releases the manifold and the at least one of the primary and secondary straps from the entangling device.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising fracturing the fracturable element using gas from at least one of the first and second gas generators.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising driving a fracture inducing element against a receiver to fracture the fracturable element.

10. A method of entangling a target vehicle with a device positioned along an expected path of the target vehicle, the target vehicle having a tire and rotating components on the underside of the vehicle, the method comprising:

deploying a primary tubular strap with a first pressure generator, the primary tubular strap includes a barb;

attaching the barb to the tire of the target vehicle;

entangling the primary tubular strap with at least one of the tire and the rotating components; and

releasing the primary tubular strap from the first pressure generator.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

deploying a secondary strap with a second pressure generator; and

entangling the secondary strap with at least one of the tire and the rotating components.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the primary tubular strap is coupled with the secondary strap.
