Abstract

Methods and devices for estimating and controlling the orientation of a drogue relative to air mass motion where method and apparatus embodiments incorporate estimation of angle of attack and sideslip and function to correct the direction of a drogue so as to maintain a desired angle of attack and sideslip. Some of the exemplary estimation techniques apply methods of sensor output fusion.

Claims (43)

measuring, based on the output of at least one pressure sensor, fluid pressure at a plurality of stations disposed about the drogue;

estimating, by a computing device, the drogue orientation relative to an air mass motion based on the output of the at least one pressure sensor;

generating a feedback command for regulating the drogue orientation relative to air mass motion;

actuating at least one orientation control device based on the generated feedback command; and

estimating the probability of failure of the at least one orientation control device.

2. The process of claim 1 further comprising the computing device:

estimating a health status for at least one pressure sensor,

processing a measurement output of the at least one pressure sensor based on a plurality of portals; and

estimating a probability of a failure for at least one pressure sensor.

3. The process of claim 1 further comprising the computing device:

inputting accelerometer measurements;

projecting the accelerometer measurements into an estimated drogue state; and

testing for accelerometer failure based on a Multiple Hypothesis Shiryayev Sequential Probability Ratio Test (MHSSPRT).

4. The process of claim 1 further comprising the computing device:

inputting accelerometer measurements;

projecting the accelerometer measurements into an estimated drogue state; and

testing for accelerometer failure based on a Chi-Square Test.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein the processing further comprises one or more fault detection filter instruction sets, wherein at least one fault detection instruction set is coupled with a statistical projector instruction set; and wherein a sensor fault detection estimation is based on a Multiple Hypothesis Shiryayev Sequential Probability Ratio Test (MHSSPRT).

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the processing further comprises one or more fault detection filter instruction sets, wherein at least one fault detection instruction set is coupled with a statistical projector instruction set; and wherein a sensor fault detection estimation is based on a Chi-Square Test.

7. A system for controlling a drogue relative to fluid motion comprising:

at least one pressure sensor and a plurality of ports disposed about the surface of the drogue;

at least one control actuating device adapted to generate rotational forces about the drogue;

circuitry providing communication between the at least one pressure sensor and the at least one control actuating device to a computing device; and

the computing device comprising a central processing unit and addressable memory,

the computing device configured to:

estimate an orientation of the drogue relative to an air mass motion based on measurement output of the at least one pressure sensor;

generate a feedback command for the at least one control actuating device for regulating the drogue orientation relative to air mass motion based on measurement output of the at least one pressure sensor, and

estimate a probability of failure of the at least one control actuating device.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the computing device is further configured to:

estimate a health status for at least one pressure sensor,

process a measurement output of the at least one pressure sensor based on a plurality of portals; and
