Abstract

A filter frame is removably attachable to a box fan. The filter frame is adapted for receiving a standard HVAC-style filter for removing contaminants from air flow induced by the fan. In this manner, a cost-effective means for filtering a flow of air is provided for residential and commercial settings. The filter frame is adaptable to a variety of standard box fan types of different styles and dimensions. The frame is configured to accommodate standard filters, such as those readily available from retail hardware stores and home centers.

Claims (26)

1. A removable filter frame for a fan, comprising:

a frame body including opposed first and second side channels, each of the first and second side channels having a longitudinal axis, the first and second side channels defining a slot for insertion of an air filter, the slot having an upper end that allows for insertion and removal of an air filter, and a lower end, wherein the frame body is unitary; and

a coupler extending from the frame body in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axes of the first and second side channels, the coupler being constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grill of a fan.

2. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the frame body is formed in a straight-pull injection molding process.

3. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the frame body further includes at least one cross member between the first and second side channels that provides lateral rigidity to the frame body.

4. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the first and second side channels each comprise a side surface of the frame body and tabs that extend from the frame body in a horizontal direction to define the first and second side channels.

5. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein a stop is positioned at the lower end of the frame body at a bottom of at least one of the first and second side channels.

6. The removable filter frame of claim 5 wherein the stop comprises a portion of the frame body that extends in a horizontal direction between the longitudinal axes of the first and second side channels.

7. The removable filter frame of claim 6 wherein the stop comprises a horizontal channel extending in the horizontal direction between bottom portions of the first and second side channels.

8. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the coupler comprises at least one tab that extends from the frame body and is constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan.

9. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the coupler comprises at least one hook that extends from the frame body and is constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan.

10. The removable filter frame of claim 9 wherein the at least one hook is spring-loaded.

11. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the coupler comprises one of multiple fasteners, multiple elongated bolts, and multiple cable ties that extend from the frame body and are constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan.

12. The removable filter frame of claim 1 further comprising elastic bands coupled to the frame body and are constructed and arranged to couple about a chassis of a fan.

13. The removable filter frame of claim 1 further comprising a foam pad coupled between the frame body and a grill of a fan.

14. The removable filter frame of claim 1 wherein the first side channel and the second side channels are constructed to have a depth such that multiple filters can be inserted in the frame body.

15. A removable filter frame for a fan, comprising:

a frame body including opposed first and second side channels, each of the first and second side channels having a longitudinal axis, the first and second side channels defining a slot for insertion of an air filter, the slot having an upper end that allows for insertion and removal of an air filter, and a lower end; and

a coupler extending from the frame body in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axes of the first and second side channels, the coupler being constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan;

wherein the coupler comprises at least one tab that extends from the frame body and is constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan and at least one spring-loaded hook that extends from the frame body and is constructed and arranged to couple the frame body to a grate of a grill of a fan.

16. The removable filter frame of claim 15 wherein the frame body is formed in a straight-pull injection molding process.

17. The removable filter frame of claim 15 wherein the frame body further includes at least one cross member between the first and second side channels that provides lateral rigidity to the frame body.

18. The removable filter frame of claim 15 wherein the first and second side channels each comprise a side surface of the frame body and tabs that extend from the frame body in a horizontal direction to define the first and second side channels.

19. The removable filter frame of claim 15 wherein a stop is positioned at the lower end of the frame body at a bottom of at least one of the first and second side channels.

20. The removable filter frame of claim 19 wherein the stop comprises a portion of the frame body that extends in a horizontal direction between the longitudinal axes of the first and second side channels.

21. The removable filter frame of claim 15 wherein the first side channel and the second side channels are constructed to have a depth such that multiple filters can be inserted in the frame body.
