Abstract

A multi-electrode system comprises a fiber support configured to hold at least one optical fiber and a set of electrodes disposed about the at least one optical fiber and configured to generate arcs between adjacent electrodes to generate a substantially uniform heated field to a circumferential outer surface of the at least one optical fiber. The electrodes can be disposed in at least a partial vacuum.

Claims (34)

1. A multi-electrode system comprises:

a support configured to hold at least one optical fiber; and

a plurality of electrodes electrically coupled to a drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes comprising:

a pair of electrodes arranged along a first axis; and

at least one other electrode arranged along a second axis, different from the first axis, wherein, when driven by the drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes generate a plurality of arcs that produce a substantially uniform heated field surrounding an outer surface of the at least one optical fiber, including at least one arc generated between the at least one other electrode and at least one electrode from the pair of electrodes.

2. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the substantially uniform heated field heats the outer surface of the at least one optical fiber by convection.

3. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein a first arc is generated between the pair of electrodes and a second arc is generated between a third electrode from the at least one other electrode and another electrode from the plurality of electrodes.

4. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical fiber is a large diameter optical fiber having a diameter of at least about 125 microns.

5. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical fiber is an optical fiber having a diameter of less than about 125 microns.

6. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical fiber is a ribbon fiber.

7. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the arcs are plasma arcs and the heated field is a heated plasma field.

8. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , wherein the pair of electrodes is disposed in at least a partial vacuum.

9. The multi-electrode system of claim 8 , wherein the electrodes are disposed in a 22″ to 24″ Hg gauge vacuum, 200 to 150 torr absolute.

10. The multi-electrode system of claim 8 , wherein the partial vacuum is an oxygen-enriched partial vacuum with plasma at a temperature of not more than about 400 C.

11. The multi-electrode system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an electrode support that maintains the plurality of electrodes at a desired distance from the at least one optical fiber held by the fiber support.

12. The multi-electrode system of claim 11 , wherein the electrode support is configured to automatically adjust the distances of the electrodes to the at least one optical fiber as a function of a diameter of the at least one optical fiber.

13. The multi-electrode system of claim 11 , wherein the electrode support is configured to automatically adjust the distances of the electrodes to the at least one optical fiber as a function of whether the at least one fiber is to be stripped or spliced.

14. An optical fiber stripper comprising:

a support configured to hold at least one optical fiber; and

a plurality of electrodes electrically coupled to a drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes comprising:

a pair of electrodes arranged along a first axis; and

at least one other electrode arranged along a second axis, different from the first axis,

wherein, when driven by the drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes generate a plurality of arcs that produce a substantially uniform heated field surrounding an outer surface of the at least one optical fiber that strips a coating from the at least one fiber, including at least one arc generated between the at least one other electrode and at least one electrode from the pair of electrodes.

15. The optical fiber stripper of claim 14 , wherein the substantially uniform heated field heats the outer surface of the at least one optical fiber by convection.

The optical fiber stripper of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of arcs are plasma arcs and the heated field is a heated plasma field, and a first arc is generated between the pair of electrodes and a second arc is generated between a third electrode from the at least one other electrode and another electrode from the plurality of electrodes.

17. The optical fiber stripper of claim 14 , wherein the electrodes are disposed in a 22″ to 24″ Hg gauge vacuum, 200 to 150 torr absolute.

18. The optical fiber stripper of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of electrodes are disposed in an oxygen-enriched partial vacuum with plasma at a temperature of not more than about 400 C.

19. An optical fiber splicer comprising:

a support configured to hold at least two optical fibers with ends abutted; and

a plurality of electrodes electrically coupled to a drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes comprising:

a pair of electrodes arranged along a first axis; and

at least one other electrode arranged along a second axis, different from the first axis, wherein, when driven by the drive circuit, the plurality of electrodes generate a plurality of arcs that produce a substantially uniform heated field surrounding an outer surface of the at least one optical fiber that spliced together the abutted ends of the at least two optical fibers, including at least one arc generated between the at least one other electrode and at least one electrode from the pair of electrodes.
