Abstract

Methods, devices, and systems establish an optical surface shape that mitigates or treats presbyopia in a particular patient. The combination of distance vision and near vision in a patient can be improved, often based on input patient parameters such as pupil size, residual accommodation, and power need. Iterative optimization may generate a customized corrective optical shape for the patient. Threshold residual accommodation is established for presbyopia treatment.

Claims (23)

1. A computer implemented method for treating presbyopia in a visual system of a particular patient, the visual system including an eye having a pupil, a change in viewing distance with the eye inducing a change in pupil dimension, the method comprising:

receiving, by a computer a plurality of pupil dimensions of the eye corresponding to a plurality of different viewing distances;

receiving, by the computer a desired effective power for the eye for each of the different viewing distances, the computer including a processor and a memory that stores instructions;

generating a a presbyopia-mitigating prescription by executing the instructions with the processor such that the presbyopia-mitigating prescription has an optical shape that provides the associated desired effective power for each of the different viewing distances; and

transmitting providing the presbyopia-mitigating prescription to an intra-ocular lens source so as to identify an intra-ocular lens that corresponds to the presbyopia-mitigating prescription such that when the intra-ocular lens is included in the visual system the presbyopia of the patient is mitigated.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the viewing distances include three or more different viewing distances.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the viewing distances include four or more different viewing distances.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the viewing distances include five or more different viewing distances.

5. The method of clam 1 , further comprising measuring one or more aberrations of the eye, and wherein the determined presbyopia-mitigating prescription further provides a refractive correction for one or more of the measured aberrations of the eye.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the determining a presbyopia-mitigating prescription step includes predicting the effectiveness of one or more candidate presbyopia-mitigating shapes, the one or more candidate shapes providing the plurality of desired effective powers and the refractive correction.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein predicting the effectiveness of the one or more candidate shapes comprises using a patient parameter specific for the patient with a compound modulation transfer function (CMTF), the compound modulation transfer function comprising a combination of modulation transfer functions (MTF's) at a plurality of distinct frequencies.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the intra-ocular lens provides an observed visual acuity of 20/25 or better and J3 or better.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising creating the intra-ocular lens.

10. A computer-implemented method for treating presbyopia of a patient, the patient having an eye with a pupil, a change in viewing distance with the eye inducing a change in pupil dimension, the method comprising:

receiving, by a computer a first dimension of the pupil at a first viewing distance;

receiving, by a computer a first desired power for the eye at the first viewing distance, the computer including a processor and a memory that stores instructions;

generating a a prescription for the eye by executing the instructions with the processor such that the prescription provides the first desired power when the pupil has the first dimension, and such that the prescription effects a desired change in power in response to the change in pupil dimension induced by a change in viewing distance, the desired change in power mitigating the presbyopia; and

transmitting providing the presbyopia-mitigating prescription to an intra-ocular lens source of so as to identify an intra-ocular lens that corresponds to the presbyopia-mitigating prescription such that when the intra-ocular lens is included in the eye the presbyopia of the patient is mitigated.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising defining a refractive correction surface of the intra-ocular lens.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the refractive correction surface comprises a backed-off refractive correction surface, the backed-off refractive correction compensating for a myopic bias.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the backed-off refractive correction surface power is 0.6 diopters less than the refractive correction surface power.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the intra-ocular lens provides an observed visual acuity of 20/25 or better and J3 or better.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising creating the intra-ocular lens.
