Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems
View Patent ↗A sensor for detecting the presence of a target analyte, ligand or molecule in a test fluid, comprising a light transmissive substrate on which an array of surface plasmon resonant (SPR) elements is mounted is described. A multi-channel sensor for detecting the presence of several targets with a single micro-chip sensor is described. A multi-channel sensor including collections of SPR elements which are commonly functionalized to one of several targets is also described. The detectors sense changes in the resonant response of the SPR elements indicative of binding with the targets.
1. A sensor chip for mounting between a light source and a detector for detecting the presence of a target analyte, ligand or molecule in a test fluid, comprising:
a light transmissive substrate;
a functionalized surface plasmon resonant (SPR) element mounted on said substrate, said SPR element functionalized to bind with the target, where the SPR element includes a light transmissive bead formed in a geometric shape that can sustain periodic boundary conditions for a stationary plasmon resonance wave to travel across the outer surface thereof, and a pinhole is defined at the interface between said SPR element and the substrate;
a housing formed of a light transmissive material and defining a fluid cavity for flowing the test fluid over said SPR element, said housing further defining at least one fluid inlet and at least one fluid outlet in communication with said cavity; and
at least one micro-fluidic component associated with said housing and operable to control fluid flow through said cavity.
2. The sensor chip of claim 1 , wherein said micro-fluidic component is a micro-fluidic pump.
3. The sensor chip of claim 2 wherein the micro-fluidic pump is mounted within said housing.
4. The sensor chip of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said fluid inlets includes a micro-fluidic valve.
5. The sensor chip of claim 4 wherein the micro-fluidic valve is mounted within the housing for controlling fluid flow through said cavity.
6. The sensor chip of claim 1 , wherein said housing further defines at least one additional fluid inlet in communication with said cavity.
7. The sensor chip of claim 6 wherein said additional fluid inlet includes a micro-fluidic valve.
8. The sensor chip of claim 1 , wherein said micro-fluidic component includes a filter.
9. The sensor chip of claim 1 , wherein said micro-fluidic component includes a pre-concentration module.
10. The sensor chip of claim 9 wherein the pre-concentration module is a microfluidic pre-concentration module.
