Abstract

The present invention relates to display devices and methods, recording media, and programs that allow moving images to be displayed with less double vision. An LCD 11 updates the display in the order of the columns or rows of pixels on the screen in units of column or row in each period of a frame. LED backlights 12 - 1 to 12 -N illuminate the pixels of the LCD 11 , respectively, so as to illuminate part of all the columns or rows on the screen. A display control section 31 controls the light emission of the LED backlights 12 - 1 to 12 -N in a manner such that the LED backlights 12 - 1 to 12 -N illuminate the pixels updated in sequence in each period of the frame. The invention can be applied to display devices.

Claims (28)

1. A display device comprising:

display means that updates the display in the order of the columns or rows of pixels on the screen in units of column or row in each period of a frame;

a plurality of light sources illuminating the pixels of the display means, respectively, so as to illuminate the columns or rows of pixels on the screen consistent with the order of the display update; and

control means controlling the light emission of the light sources in a manner such that the light sources illuminate the pixels updated in sequence in each period of the frame, wherein

the control means comprises:

sync-signal generating means generating a sync signal for synchronization with the frame;

light-emission-indication-signal generating means generating a plurality of light-emission indication signals for the light sources on the basis of the sync signal, respectively, the light-emission indication signals being respectively delayed from the frame-starting time according to a delay time that is dependent upon the period of the frame and the number of the light sources; and

a plurality of light-emission control means controlling the light emission of the light sources in response to the light-emission indication signals on a one-to-one basis,

wherein the delay time is equal to (k−1)/(M*N), where M is a frame rate corresponding to the period of the frame, N is the number of light sources, and k is the kth of the plurality of light-emission indication signals.

2. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein

the control means further comprises waveform shaping means that shapes the waveform of the light-emission indication signals so that the values of the light-emission indication signals change with the passage of time; and

the light-emission control means controls the light emission of the light sources so as to change the intensity of the light emission of the light sources in accordance with the values of the shaped light-emission indication signals.

3. The display device according to claim 2 , wherein the waveform shaped by the waveform shaping means reaches the maximum height at the rising, and attenuates exponentially, or decreases monotonously, with the passage of time.

4. The display device according to claim 2 , wherein the light-emission-indication-signal generating means generates a plurality of light-emission indication signals for the light sources, respectively, the light-emission indication signals being delayed in accordance with the number of the light sources with reference to the time after a lapse of a specified time from the frame-starting time.

5. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein the light-emission-indication-signal generating means generates the plurality of light-emission indication signals for the light sources, respectively, the light-emission indication signals being delayed in accordance with the number of the light sources with reference to the time after a lapse of a specified time from the frame-starting time.

6. A display method for a display device that comprises a display means that updates the display in the order of the columns or rows of pixels on the screen in units of column or row in each period of a frame, and a plurality of light sources illuminating the pixels of the display means, respectively, so as to illuminate the columns or rows of pixels on the screen consistent with the order of the display update, the method comprising:

controlling the light emission of the light sources in a manner such that the light sources illuminate the pixels updated in sequence in each period of the frame;

generating a sync signal for synchronization with the frame;

generating a plurality of light-emission indication signals for the light sources on the basis of the sync signal, respectively, the light-emission indication signals being respectively delayed from the frame-starting time according to a delay time that is dependent upon the period of the frame and the number of the light sources; and

controlling the light emission of the light sources in response to the light-emission indication signals,

wherein the delay time is equal to (k−1)/(M*N), where M is a frame rate corresponding to the period of the frame, N is the number of light sources, and k is the kth of the plurality of light-emission indication signals.

7. A non-transitory computer readable medium in which a computer-readable program is recorded, the program containing instructions executable by a processor to perform operations comprising:

controlling the display of a display device that comprises display means that updates the display in the order of the columns or rows of pixels on the screen in units of column or row in each period of a frame, and a plurality of light sources illuminating the pixels of the display means, respectively, so as to illuminate the columns or rows of pixels on the screen consistent with the order of the display update;

controlling the light emission of the light sources in a manner such that the light sources illuminate the pixels updated in sequence in each period of the frame;

generating a sync signal for synchronization with the frame;

generating a plurality of light-emission indication signals for the light sources on the basis of the sync signal, respectively, the light-emission indication signals being respectively delayed from the frame starting time according to a delay time that is dependent upon the period of the frame and the number of the light sources; and

controlling the light emission of the light sources in response to the light-emission indication signals,

wherein the delay time is equal to (k−1)/(M*N), where M is a frame rate corresponding to the period of the frame, N is the number of light sources, and k is the kth of the plurality of light-emission indication signals.
