Abstract

The present invention relates generally a manufacturing process which results in a completely hydrogel polymer device that maintains lumen patency which allows for numerous applications. Catheters and stents are particular examples, and their composition, mechanical characteristics, and the significantly unique ability to conduct and allow fluids to pass from one end to the other without physiological rejection, inflammation, or manifestation of complications due to implant or otherwise undesirable outcomes when used for ambulatory and or therapeutic interventions is the purpose of the invention.

Claims (23)

1. A method of producing a stent or catheter comprising the steps of:

depositing an inner layer material comprising a hydrogel on a rotating, horizontally disposed mandrel;

coagulating the inner layer comprising the hydrogel in place on said mandrel;

dehydrating said inner layer material; and

depositing a second layer of material comprising a hydrogel on the inner layer such that a stent or catheter is produced wherein the stent or catheter is produced without thermoplastic processing.

2. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 1 further comprising removal of said original mandrel, subsequent to initial processing to create additional effects.

3. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 2 wherein use of a mandrel comprising a larger outside diameter will result in a thinner dehydrated wall when preparing for a concurrent layer.

4. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 2 further comprising the step of changing an annular cross sectional area of the stent or catheter by infusing the hydrogel with fluid wherein the achieved change in annular cross sectional area is proportional to the volume of fluid absorbed.

5. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 2 wherein a smaller outside diameter mandrel is utilized.

6. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 5 wherein said mandrel is barbell shaped and allows for an as cast profile wherein the deposition of hydrogel conformingly coats the mandrel.

7. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 1 wherein a set of mandrels of a combination of diameters is utilized.

8. The method of producing a stent or catheter of claim 1 , further comprising the step of removing the mandrel after coagulating the hydrogel in place on said mandrel.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel comprises a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile polymer.

10. A method of producing a stent or catheter, comprising the steps of:

depositing an inner layer material comprising a hydrogel on a rotating mandrel;

coagulating the inner layer material comprising a hydrogel in place on said mandrel;

dehydrating said inner layer material;

depositing a second layer of material onto the inner layer material such that a solid, tubular stent or catheter is produced,

wherein the hydrogel comprises a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile polymer.

11. The method of any one of claims 1 , 4 , 10 or 9 wherein the stent or catheter is a stent.

12. The method of any one of claims 1 , 4 , 10 or 9 wherein the stent or catheter is a catheter.

13. The method of any one of claims 1 , 4 , 10 or 9 , wherein the stent or catheter is a ureteral catheter.

14. The method of any of claims 1 , 4 , 10 or, 9 , wherein the stent or catheter is a ureteral stent.
