Abstract

Systems and methods for performing joint demodulation using a Viterbi equalizer having an adaptive total number of states are disclosed. Generally, a method includes joint demodulating a desired signal and none or more interfering signals with a Viterbi equalizer having an adaptive total number of states based on channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients associated with a desired signal and the one or more interfering signals.

Claims (33)

1. A method comprising:

jointly demodulating a desired signal and one or more interfering signals of a received signal using a Viterbi equalizer having an adaptive total number of states based on first channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients associated with the desired signal and second CIR coefficients associated with the one more interfering signals;

determining the second CIR coefficients based on a first cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of an interfering signal of the one or more interfering signals;

determining the first CIR coefficients based on a second cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of the interfering signal;

determining a time difference between a time value of a peak in the first cross-correlation function and a time value of a peak in the second cross-correlation function; and

wherein determining the second CIR coefficients is further based on the time difference.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more interfering signals comprises at least one dominant interfering signal and each of the at least one dominant interfering signal has a signal power which is within a threshold difference of the dominant interfering signal having a greatest power.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

detecting the one or more interfering signals.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining the at least one dominant interfering signal of the one or more interfering signals.

5. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

jointly demodulating a desired signal and one or more interfering signals of a received signal using a Viterbi equalizer having an adaptive total number of states based on first channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients associated with the desired signal and second CIR coefficients associated with the one or more interfering signals;

determining the second CIR coefficients based on a first cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of an interfering signal of the one or more interfering signals;

determining the first CIR coefficients based on a first cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of the interfering signal;

determining a time difference between a time value of a peak in the first cross-correlation function and a time value of a peak in the second cross-correlation function; and

wherein determining the second CIR coefficients is further based on the time difference.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 5 , wherein the one or more interfering signals comprises at least one dominant interfering signal and each of the at least one dominant interfering signal has a signal power which is within a threshold difference of the dominant interfering signal having a greatest power.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

detecting the one or more interfering signals.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 6 , further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

determining the at least one dominant interfering signal of the one or more interfering signals.

9. A system comprising:

a channel estimator configured to determine first channel impulse response (CIR) coefficients associated with an interfering signal of one or more interfering signals and configured to determine second CIR coefficients associated with a desired signal; and

a demodulator configured to jointly demodulate the desired signal and the one or more interfering signals using a Viterbi equalizer having an adaptive total number of states based on the first CIR coefficients and the second CIR coefficients,

wherein the first CIR coefficients are based on a first cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of the interfering signal and the second CIR coefficients are based on a second cross-correlation function between the received signal and a training sequence of the desired signal,

wherein the channel estimator is further configured to:

determine a time difference between a time value of a peak in the first cross-correlation function and a time value of a peak in the second cross-correlation function,

wherein the channel estimator estimates the first CIR coefficients based on the time difference.

10. The system of claim 9 ,

wherein the one or more interfering signals comprises at least one dominant interfering signal and each of the at least one dominant interfering signal has a signal power which is within a threshold difference of the dominant interfering signal having a greatest power.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the joint demodulator is further configured to detect the one or more interfering signals.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the joint demodulator is further configured to determine the at least one dominant interfering signal of the one or more interfering signals.
