Abstract

A tensioner for tensioning a belt includes a support housing at least in part defining a spring cavity. A damping member having a first friction bearing surface is at least partially disposed in the spring cavity. An arm pivotally attached to the support housing has a second friction bearing surface. A spring is located in the spring cavity and operatively connected to the arm and damping member to pivot the damping member about a pivot location such that the first friction bearing surface of the damping member is biased against the second friction bearing surface of the arm to dampen relative movement between the arm and the support housing.

Claims (35)

1. A tensioner for tensioning a belt, the tensioner comprising:

a support housing at least in part defining a spring cavity;

a damping member at least partially disposed in the spring cavity, the damping member having a first damping portion pivotally connected to the support housing near a first end of the first damping portion and a second damping portion pivotally connected to the first damping portion at a hinged joint near a second end the first damping portion opposite the first end such that the first and second damping portions are capable of moving relative to each other;

an arm pivotally attached to the support housing; and

a spring located in the spring cavity and having a first end operatively connected to the arm and a second end operatively connected to the second damping portion of the damping member, the spring biasing the arm to pivot relative to the support housing and biasing the first and second damping portions of the damping member to pivot into frictional contact with the arm.

2. The tensioner of claim 1 , wherein the spring is connected to the damping member at a single contact location.

3. The tensioner of claim 1 , wherein the spring is a flat wire spring.

4. The tensioner of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the damping member is slideably captured between the arm and the support housing.

5. The tensioner of claim 4 further comprising a bushing at least partially disposed between the arm and the support housing adjacent the portion of the damping member located between the arm and the support housing.

6. A tensioner for tensioning a belt, the tensioner comprising:

a support housing at least in part defining a spring cavity;

a damping member having a first damping portion pivotally connected to the support housing and a second damping portion pivotally connected to the first damping portion at a hinged joint such that the first and second damping portions are capable of moving relative to each other;

an arm pivotally attached to the support housing; and

a spring located in the spring cavity, the spring having a first end operatively connected to the arm and a second end operatively connected to the second damping portion of the damping member;

wherein the damping member and spring are connected at a single location.

7. The tensioner of claim 6 , wherein the spring is a flat wire spring.

8. A tensioner for tensioning a belt, the tensioner comprising:

a support housing at least in part defining a spring cavity;

a damping member having a first damping portion and a second damping portion pivotally connected to each other at a hinged joint, wherein the first damping portion is pivotally connected to the support housing at a fixed pivot point;

an arm pivotally attached to the support housing; and

a spring located in the spring cavity and having a first end operatively connected to the arm and a second end operatively connected to the second damping portion of the damping member, wherein the spring biases the second damping portion of the damping member into frictional contact with the arm and wherein movement of the second damping portion causes the first damping portion to pivot about the fixed pivot point.

9. The tensioner of claim 8 , wherein the spring is a flat wire spring.

10. A method of tensioning a belt using a tensioner including a support housing at least in part defining a spring cavity and an arm pivotally connected to the support housing, the method comprising:

biasing the arm to pivot relative to the support housing a spring; and

biasing a first damping portion and a second damping portion of a damping member into frictional contact with the arm using the spring wherein the first damping portion and the second damping portion are connected to each other by a hinged joint and wherein the spring is in contact with the second damping portion but not the first damping portion.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the spring is in contact with the damping member at a single location.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising moving a first damping portion of the damping member relative to a second damping portion of the damping member, the first and second damping portions connected by a joint.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of biasing the damping member against the friction bearing surface located in the spring cavity includes biasing the damping member against an inner surface of the arm that forms an outer periphery of the spring cavity.

14. The tensioner of claim 1 , wherein pivotal rotation of the arm in a first direction relative to the support housing increases torsional force in the spring and thereby increases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member, and wherein rotation of the arm in a second direction relative to the support housing, opposite the first direction, decreases torsional force in the spring and thereby decreases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member.

15. The tensioner of claim 1 , wherein the hinged joint connecting the first and second damping portions of the damping member pivots about a fixed pivot point at which the first damping portion is pivotally connected to the support housing.

16. The tensioner of claim 6 , wherein the second damping portion of the damping member is pivotally connected to the first damping portion of the damping member by a hinged joint that pivots about a fixed pivot point at which the first damping portion is pivotally connected to the support housing.

17. The tensioner of claim 6 wherein pivotal rotation of the arm in a first direction relative to the support housing increases torsional force in the spring and thereby increases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member, and wherein rotation of the arm in a second direction relative to the support housing, opposite the first direction, decreases torsional force in the spring and thereby decreases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member.

18. The tensioner of claim 8 wherein the hinged joint connecting the first and second damping portions of the damping member is pivotable about the fixed pivot point at which the first damping portion is connected to the support housing.

19. The tensioner of claim 8 wherein pivotal rotation of the arm in a first direction relative to the support housing increases torsional force in the spring and thereby increases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member, and wherein rotation of the arm in a second direction relative to the support housing, opposite the first direction, decreases torsional force in the spring and thereby decreases frictional damping between the arm and the damping member.

20. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of biasing the first and second damping portions of the damping member into frictional contact with the arm comprises exerting a force on the second damping portion with the spring such that the second damping portion pivots about the hinged joint connecting the first and second damping portions into tighter engagement with the arm and exerting a force on the first damping portion with the spring through the second damping portion such that the first damping portion pivots about a fixed pivot point on the support housing into tighter engagement with the arm.
