Abstract

A magnetic attachment system for attaching a first object to a second object. A first magnet structure is attached to the first object and a second magnet structure is attached to the second object by the magnetic attraction between the first magnet structure and second magnet structure. The magnet structures comprise magnetic elements arranged in accordance with patterns based on various codes. In various embodiments, the code has certain autocorrelation properties, the code may be from a set of codes with low cross correlation; an attachment and a release configuration may be achieved by a simple movement of the magnet structures; the magnetic pattern may be configured to allow installation of a selected panel of a set of panels in a given location or orientation while rejecting the remaining panels of the set; or the magnetic pattern is configured using codes with low cross correlation.

Claims (22)

1. A system for generating a detachable magnetic attachment force with a selective attachment property, said system comprising:

a first magnetic structure for association with a first article, said first magnetic structure comprising magnetic field components configured in accordance with a first code; said first code having a first maximum autocorrelation magnitude;

a first complementary magnetic structure complementary to said first magnetic structure, said first complementary magnetic structure for association with a first magnetic attachment position, said first magnetic structure and said first complementary magnetic structure having an attachment configuration and a release configuration when in mechanical alignment;

a second magnetic structure for association with a second article, said second magnetic structure comprising magnetic field components configured in accordance with a second code, said second code having a second maximum autocorrelation magnitude;

a second complementary magnetic structure complementary to said second magnetic structure, said second complementary magnetic structure for association with a second magnetic attachment position, said second magnetic structure and said second complementary magnetic structure having an attachment configuration and a release configuration when in mechanical alignment;

said first code and said second code having a cross correlation function having a peak magnitude less than half of said first maximum autocorrelation magnitude and less than half of said second maximum autocorrelation magnitude;

said first magnetic structure having an attraction to said second complementary magnetic structure in accordance with said cross correlation function when said first magnetic structure and said second complementary magnetic structure are in mechanical alignment.

2. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first code and said second code are from a set of codes having a low mutual cross correlation among all codes in the set of codes, said low mutual cross correlation being less than half of a peak autocorrelation for a code in the set of codes.

3. The system in accordance with claim 2 , wherein the set of codes is a Kasami set.

4. The system in accordance with claim 2 , wherein the set of codes is a Gold set.

5. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first magnetic structure comprises a ring structure.

6. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first magnetic structure comprises a linear structure.

7. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first article and said second article are portions of a particular article, said first magnetic structure and said second magnetic structure separated by a distance; and said first magnetic structure and said second magnetic structure enforce attachment of said particular article in a predefined orientation.

8. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first code autocorrelation function has a single maximum peak magnitude value per code modulo and one or more peaks separate from said single maximum peak wherein a maximum magnitude value of said one or more peaks is less than half of the single maximum peak magnitude value.

9. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first code autocorrelation function has discrete values corresponding to magnet positions in said first magnet structure, and said first code autocorrelation function has a single maximum peak magnitude value per code modulo and all other values have a magnitude of less than half of the single maximum peak magnitude value.

10. The system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first code autocorrelation function has a single maximum peak magnitude value per code modulo wherein a maximum magnitude value of said autocorrelation function separated from said single maximum peak by at least one magnet position is less than half of the single maximum peak magnitude value.

11. The system in accordance with claim 10 , wherein said first code and said second code are from a set of codes having a low mutual cross correlation among all codes in the set of codes, said low mutual cross correlation being less than half of a peak autocorrelation for a code in the set of codes.

12. The system in accordance with claim 11 , wherein the set of codes is a Kasami set.

13. The system in accordance with claim 11 , wherein the set of codes is a Gold set.

14. The system in accordance with claim 10 , wherein said first magnetic structure comprises a ring structure.

15. The system in accordance with claim 10 , wherein said first magnetic structure comprises a linear structure.

16. The system in accordance with claim 10 , wherein said first article and said second article are portions of a particular article, said first magnetic structure and said second magnetic structure separated by a distance; and said first magnetic structure and said second magnetic structure enforce attachment of said particular article in a predefined orientation.
