Abstract

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method of excising tissue including injecting fluid into the submucosa to raise targeted tissue. A first electrode is positioned below the targeted tissue within the injected fluid and a second electrode is positioned adjacent a surface of the raised targeted tissue opposite the first electrode. Electrical current is applied between the first and second electrodes and the targeted tissue is excised with the second electrode.

Claims (33)

1. A method of excising tissue in a body, comprising:

injecting fluid into tissue to raise targeted tissue;

positioning a first electrode within the injected fluid through an injection needle, the injection needle having a distal portion incapable of conducting electricity;

positioning a second electrode adjacent a surface of the raised targeted tissue and opposite the first electrode, wherein the first and second electrodes include an alignment mechanism to align the first and second electrodes when positioned;

applying current between the first and second electrodes; and

excising the targeted tissue with the second electrode.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alignment mechanism includes a first magnet positioned along a distal portion of the first electrode, and a second magnet positioned along a distal portion of the second electrode, and further comprising aligning the first and second electrodes by attracting the first and second magnets towards each other.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alignment mechanism includes one of radiopaque markers, electronic transducers, and a photo-detector/photo-emitter transducer pair positioned on the first and second electrodes.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising insulating the current between the first and second electrodes by retracting at least a portion of the first electrode into the injection needle.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising excising the target tissue by proximally retracting the second electrode.

6. A method of excising tissue in a body, comprising:

injecting fluid into tissue to raise targeted tissue;

positioning a first electrode within the injected fluid through an injection needle, the injection needle having a distal portion incapable of conducting electricity;

positioning a second electrode adjacent a surface of the raised targeted tissue opposite the first electrode;

aligning the first and second electrodes by bringing the first and second electrodes towards each other;

applying current between the first and second electrodes; and

excising the targeted tissue with the second electrode.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising a first magnet positioned along a distal portion of the first electrode, a second magnet positioned along a distal portion of the second electrode, a third magnet positioned along a proximal portion of the first electrode, and a fourth magnet positioned along a proximal portion of the second electrode, and further comprising aligning the distal portions of the first and second electrodes by magnetically attracting the first and second magnets, and aligning the proximal portions of the first and second electrodes by magnetically attracting the third and fourth magnets.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising insulating the current between the first and second electrodes by retracting at least a portion of the first electrode into the injection needle.

9. A method of excising tissue in a body, comprising:

injecting fluid into tissue to raise targeted tissue;

positioning a first electrode within the injected fluid through an injection needle, the injection needle having a distal portion incapable of conducting electricity;

positioning a second electrode adjacent a surface of the raised targeted tissue opposite the first electrode, wherein a first marker is disposed on the first electrode and a second marker is disposed on the second electrode;

applying current between the first and second electrodes; and

excising the targeted tissue with the second electrode.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first marker is positioned along a distal portion of the first electrode, and the second marker is positioned along a distal portion of the second electrode.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second electrodes are electrically conductive snare loops, each snare loop being movable between a retracted state and an expanded state.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising insulating the current between the first and second electrodes by retracting at least a portion of the first electrode into the injection needle.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alignment mechanism includes a first radiopaque marker positioned along a distal portion of the first electrode, and a second radiopaque marker positioned along a distal portion of the second electrode, and further comprising performing a visualization technique to determine a position of the first radiopaque marker relative to a position of the second radiopaque marker.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising aligning the position of the first radiopaque marker with the position of the second radiopaque marker to align the first electrode with the second electrode based on the visualization technique, wherein the visualization technique includes one of x-ray, MRI, fluoroscopy, and endoscopic visualization.

15. The method of claim 6 , further comprising a first radiopaque marker positioned along a distal portion of the first electrode, and a second radiopaque marker positioned along a distal portion of the second electrode, and further comprising performing a visualization technique to determine a position of the first radiopaque marker relative to a position of the second radiopaque marker.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising aligning the position of the first radiopaque marker with the position of the second radiopaque marker when bringing the first and second electrodes towards each other based on the visualization technique.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first marker is a first radiopaque marker, and the second marker is a second radiopaque marker, and further comprising performing a visualization technique to determine a position of the first radiopaque marker relative to a position of the second radiopaque marker, and aligning the position of the first radiopaque marker with the position of the second radiopaque marker to align the first electrode with the second electrode based on the visualization technique.
