Abstract

Systems and methods for using antiprotons for terminating unwanted or undesirable cells which can be used in the treatment of conditions caused by the existence and/or proliferation of such undesirable cells. Such conditions include cardiovascular ailments, Parkinson's disease, wet macular degeneration, endocrine disorders, dermatological ailments, and cancer. Because of the unique nature of antiprotons and their annihilation characteristics, the preferred antiproton delivery device ( 1010, 1015, 1030 ) embodiments further incorporate detector arrays ( 1050 a ), capable of detecting characteristic emissions in the course of treatment.

Claims (26)

1. A method for treating a patient having a plurality of undesirable cells, comprising:

inserting a plurality of antiprotons into an accelerator;

controlling said accelerator so as to control temperature of said antiprotons while accelerating said antiprotons to a predetermined, therapeutic energy level;

extracting said antiprotons from said accelerator at said therapeutic energy level; and

exposing at least a portion of the plurality of the undesirable cells to said antiprotons at said therapeutic energy level.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exposing is carried out with said undesired cells being cancerous cells.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring said antiprotons during said accelerating.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising monitoring current of said antiprotons during said accelerating.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling includes adjusting magnetic field in dipole correctors during said accelerating.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling includes adjusting phase and amplitude of a radio-frequency cavity through which the antiprotons pass during said accelerating.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said controlling includes adjusting electromagnetic field frequency of a radio-frequency cavity through which the antiprotons pass during said accelerating, said adjusting carried out such that said frequency matches an integer multiple of revolution frequency of said antiprotons during said accelerating.

8. The method of claim 1 , further including generating radioisotopes within said patient with said antiprotons in carrying out imaging and therapeutic treatment.

9. A method for treating a patient, comprising:

inserting a plurality of antiprotons into an accelerator;

controlling said accelerator so as to control temperature of said antiprotons while accelerating said antiprotons to a predetermined, irradiation energy level;

extracting said antiprotons from said accelerator at said irradiating energy level;

irradiating at least a portion of the patient body to said antiprotons at said irradiating energy level;

generating radioisotopes within said body by irradiating with said antiprotons; and

providing patient therapy with said radioisotopes.

10. A method for imaging a patient, comprising:

inserting a plurality of antiprotons into an accelerator;

controlling said accelerator so as to control temperature of said antiprotons while accelerating said antiprotons to a predetermined, irradiation energy level;

extracting said antiprotons from said accelerator at said irradiating energy level;

irradiating at least a portion of the patient body to said antiprotons at said irradiating energy level;

generating radioisotopes within said body by irradiating with said antiprotons; and

providing patient imaging with said radioisotopes.
