Abstract

An electrode array which is able to be inserted to a desired depth within the cochlea to provide useful percepts for the recipient which will also preferably not cause damage to the sensitive structures of the cochlea. The electrode array is insertable through an opening in the cochlea and into at least the basal region of the cochlea and comprises an elongate carrier having a proximal end, a distal end, and a plurality of electrodes supported by the carrier at respective spaced locations thereon in a region between the proximal end and the distal end. A stabilising collar extends outwardly from the elongate carrier at or adjacent a proximal end thereof and has an abutment surface adapted to abut a portion of the cochlea surface around the cochleostomy and at least substantially prevent movement of the carrier following completion of insertion of the array into the cochlea.

Claims (28)

1. An electrode array for use in a cochlear implant system, the array comprising:

a flexible elongate carrier;

a plurality of electrode contacts supported by the carrier, wherein at least two of the contacts are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the carrier;

a flexible collar disposed about at least a portion of the carrier;

an anchor adjacent to the distal end of the collar, the anchor adapted to be sutured to tissue or bone to reduce longitudinal rotation of the array;

a pressed fascia washer adapted to contact the anchor; and

a rotation indicator on the array indicating the rotational orientation of the at least two contacts, wherein the rotation indicator is located proximal to the anchor.

2. The array of claim 1 further comprising a depth indicator.

3. The array of claim 1 , wherein the carrier has a curved configuration.

4. The array of claim 1 , wherein the carrier has a curved configuration and a straight configuration.

5. The array of claim 1 , wherein the cross sectional area of the array is selected to have a substantially minimal effect on the patient's natural capacity to detect sounds.

6. The array of claim 5 , wherein the array has a cross sectional area of less than about 0.2 mm×0.4 mm.

7. The array of claim 1 , wherein the length of the carrier is selected such that a distal end of the array extends to the basal turn region of the cochlea.

8. The array of claim 7 , wherein the carrier is less than about 10 mm in length.

9. The array of claim 1 , wherein all of the plurality of electrode contacts are aligned along the longitudinal axis of the carrier.

10. The array of claim 9 , wherein the rotation indicator is aligned with the plurality of electrode contacts.

11. The array of claim 1 , wherein the collar includes the rotation indicator.

12. The array of claim 1 , wherein the collar comprises a mesh for supporting fascia.

13. The array of claim 1 , wherein the anchor is adapted to be sutured to the promontory bone.

14. A cochlear implant device comprising:

a receiver coil;

a receiver stimulating unit;

a reference electrode array;

an electrode array including a plurality of electrode contacts, wherein the plurality of contacts provide electrical stimulation corresponding to substantially all sound frequencies conventionally audible to a human; and

a flexible electrode array including at least two electrode contacts aligned along a longitudinal axis of the array, a flexible collar, an anchor adjacent to the distal end of the collar, a pressed fascia washer adapted to contact the anchor, a depth indicator, and a rotation indicator,

wherein the anchor is adapted to be sutured to tissue or bone to reduce longitudinal rotation of the flexible electrode array.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the cross sectional area of the flexible array is selected to have a substantially minimal effect on the patient's natural capacity to detect sounds.

16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the anchor is adapted to be sutured to the promontory bone.
