Abstract

Embodiments of an apparatus comprising a base including a proximal end, a distal end, and a receptacle in the distal end that is adapted to interchangeably receive a lens adapter; a set of base optics positioned in the proximal end of the base; and adjustable-focus optics positioned in the base and optically coupled to the base optics and, when the lens adapter is present, to the lens adapter. Embodiments of a process including forming a base including a proximal end, a distal end, and a receptacle in the distal end that is adapted to interchangeably receive any one of a plurality of lens adapters; positioning a set of base optics in the proximal end of the base; and positioning adjustable-focus optics positioned in the base such that they are optically coupled to the base optics and, when the lens adapter is present, to the lens adapter. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Claims (40)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a base including a proximal end, a distal end, and a receptacle in the distal end that is adapted to interchangeably receive a lens adapter;

a set of base optics positioned in the proximal end of the base, the set of base optics including at least one optical element having optical power; and

electrically activated, adjustable-focus optics positioned in the base and optically coupled to the base optics and, when the lens adapter is present, to the lens adapter, wherein the focal length of the adjustable-focus optics can be adjusted in a range that includes both positive and negative values.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the receptacle is threaded to receive a compatibly-threaded end of the lens adapter.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the base optics are interchangeable.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the base optics have a fixed focal length.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the adjustable-focus optics in the base comprises a liquid lens.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the liquid lens comprises two different liquids.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a lens adapter positioned in the receptacle and optically coupled to the adjustable-focus optics.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the lens adapter is selected from among a plurality of lens adaptors having different combinations of field of view, depth of field, and working focal length.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a mount on the proximal end of the base for mounting the apparatus to an image sensor.

10. A system comprising:

an optical assembly comprising:

a base including a proximal end, a distal end, and a receptacle in the distal end that is adapted to interchangeably receive a lens adapter,

a set of base optics positioned in the proximal end of the base, the set of base optics including at least one optical element having optical power,

electrically activated, adjustable-focus optics positioned in the base and optically coupled to the base optics and, when the lens adapter is present, to the lens adapter, wherein the focal length of the adjustable-focus optics can be adjusted in a range that includes both positive and negative values; and

an image sensor optically coupled to the optical assembly.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the adjustable-focus optics in the base comprises a liquid lens.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the liquid lens comprises two different liquids.

13. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a lens adapter positioned in the receptacle and optically coupled to the adjustable-focus optics.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the lens adapter is selected from among a plurality of lens adaptors having different combinations of field of view, depth of field, and working focal length.

15. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a signal conditioning circuit coupled to the image sensor.
