Abstract

A system and method for delivering a surgical clip to a surgical site within a patient's body to compress body tissue is disclosed. In one embodiment for the system of the present invention, the system includes an endoscopic device that has an endoscope cap disposed on a distal end of the endoscopic device. A surgical clip is removably disposed on an outside surface of the endoscope cap. A deployment device is associated with the surgical clip for deploying the surgical clip from the endoscope cap to the body tissue that is to be compressed. The surgical clip can be a deformable clip that is deployed in a non deformed configuration, and is then deformed so as to apply compression on selected tissue. The surgical clip can be a multi-legged clip, having a plurality of legs that can be locked in a closed position to apply compression to body tissue.

Claims (34)

1. A medical device for use in a tissue grasping procedure, the medical device comprising:

(i) an endoscope having a distal end;

(ii) a surgical clip adapted to be deployed from the distal end of the endoscope; and

(iii) a device for deploying the surgical clip from the distal end of the endoscope;

wherein the surgical clip comprises at least two tissue grasping surfaces and at least two hinge areas;

wherein the surgical clip has a first open position in which the tissue grasping surfaces are separated by a first distance; and

wherein the surgical clip has a second tissue grasping position in which portions of the surgical clip have been moved relative to each other by pivoting around the hinge areas to bring the tissue grasping surfaces closer together than the first distance in order to grasp tissue between the tissue grasping surfaces.

2. A medical device for use in a tissue grasping procedure, the medical device comprising:

(i) a surgical clip; and

(ii) a device for deploying the surgical clip;

wherein the surgical clip comprises at least two tissue grasping surfaces and at least two hinge areas;

wherein the surgical clip has a first open position in which the tissue grasping surfaces are separated by a first distance; and

wherein the surgical clip has a second tissue grasping position in which portions of the surgical clip have been moved relative to each other by pivoting around the hinge areas to bring the tissue grasping surfaces closer together than the first distance in order to grasp tissue between the tissue grasping surfaces.

3. The medical device of claim 2 , further comprising an endoscope having a distal end, wherein the surgical clip is coupled to the distal end of the endoscope.

4. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the surgical clip comprises a ring portion, and wherein the hinge areas are portions of the ring portion such that when the surgical clip is moved from the first open position to the second tissue grasping position, the ring portion is bent.

The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the surgical clip comprises a ring portion and a plurality of legs attached to the ring portion, wherein the hinge areas are located between the legs and the ring portion, each of the legs being movable between the first open position and the second tissue grasping position without a substantial change in configuration of the ring portion.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , further comprising a locking mechanism to restrict movement of each of the legs from the second tissue grasping position to the first open position.

7. The medical device of claim 6 , wherein the locking mechanism is a ratchet mechanism.

8. The medical device of claim 5 , further comprising a catch to mechanically retain the legs in the first open position.

9. The medical device of claim 2 , further comprising resilient devices adapted to urge the surgical clip the first open position or the second tissue grasping position.

10. The medical device of claim 2 , further comprising an actuator mechanism to move the surgical clip from the first open position to the second tissue grasping position.

11. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator mechanism comprises strings pulling the surgical clip into the second tissue grasping position.

12. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator mechanism comprises a rack and pinion arrangement.

13. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator mechanism comprises a remotely operated sheath.

14. A method for deploying a surgical clip for grasping tissue, the method comprising:

(i) providing a medical device comprising a surgical clip and a device for deploying the surgical clip, the surgical clip comprising at least two tissue grasping surfaces and at least two hinge areas;

(ii) positioning the surgical clip adjacent tissue to be grasped, while holding the surgical clip in a first open position in which the tissue grasping surfaces are separated by a first distance; and

(iii) moving the surgical clip from the first open position to a second tissue grasping position in which portions of the surgical clip have been moved relative to each other by pivoting around the hinge areas to bring the tissue grasping surfaces closer together than the first distance in order to grasp tissue between the tissue grasping surfaces.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the medical device further comprises an endoscope having a distal end, wherein the surgical clip is coupled to the distal end of the endoscope.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the surgical clip comprises a ring portion, and wherein the hinge areas are portions of the ring portion such that when the surgical clip is moved from the first open position to the second tissue grasping position, the ring portion is bent.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the surgical clip comprises a ring portion and a plurality of legs attached to the ring portion, wherein the hinge areas are located between the legs and the ring portion, each of the legs being movable between the first open position and the second tissue grasping position without a substantial change in configuration of the ring portion.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the surgical clip further comprises a locking mechanism to restrict movement of each of the legs from the second tissue grasping position to the first open position.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising a catch to mechanically retain the legs in the first open position.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising an actuator mechanism to move the surgical clip from the first open position to the second tissue grasping position.
