Abstract

A dressing assembly for use with a reduced pressure treatment system, the dressing assembly develops a directed force under reduced pressure. The directed force may be a radial force or a closing force. The dressing assembly includes a shaped dressing bolster having a shaped extremity that is operable to evenly deliver the radial force and to distribute reduced pressure. Numerous shapes may be used for the shaped extremity. The dressing assembly may further include an over-drape to assist in creating a seal over the shaped dressing bolster and against a portion of a patient's epidermis.

Claims (43)

1. A dressing assembly for use with a reduced pressure treatment system, the dressing assembly comprising:

a shaped dressing bolster having a first surface, a second, inward-facing surface;

an oblique extremity formed by a portion of the shaped dressing bolster;

a comfort layer coupled to the second, inward-facing surface of the shaped dressing bolster;

wherein the shaped dressing bolster is formed from a medical bolster material, the shaped dressing bolster for placing on the patient's epidermis;

wherein the medical bolster material has a density greater than 20 kg/m 3 ; and

wherein the shaped dressing bolster has the characteristic of evenly distributing a directed force when under a reduced pressure.

2. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the oblique surface of the extremity makes an angle alpha (α) with a normal reference and wherein the angle alpha (α) is greater than ten degrees (α>10 degrees).

3. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the oblique surface of the extremity makes an angle alpha (α) with a normal reference and wherein the angle alpha (α) is in a range between 10 degrees and 70 degrees (70°>α>10°).

4. The dressing assembly of claim 1 further comprising an over-drape disposed over the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster.

5. The dressing assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

an over-drape disposed over the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster; and

a drape sealing apparatus coupled to the over-drape for sealing the over-drape to a patient's epidermis.

6. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster further comprises a plurality of flexibility notches formed on the first surface of the dressing bolster.

7. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped extremity comprises a member with a trapezoidal cross-section in two orthogonal planes.

8. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped extremity comprises a member with an arcuate cross-section in two orthogonal planes.

9. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped extremity comprises a member with an elliptical cross-section in two orthogonal planes.

10. The dressing assembly of claim 1 further comprising an over-drape disposed over the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster and wherein at least a portion of the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster is coupled to a portion of the over-drape.

11. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a reticulated foam having a density greater than 25.6 kg/m 3 .

12. The dressing assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a reticulated foam having a density greater than 32.0 kg/m 3 .

13. The dressing assembly of claim 1 further comprising: an inner layer having a first surface and a second, inward-facing surface and wherein the first surface of the inner layer is coupled, at least in part, to a portion of the second surface of the shaped dressing bolster.

14. The dressing assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

an over-drape;

a plurality of flexibility notches formed on the first surface of the dressing bolster;

an inner layer having a first surface and a second, inward-facing surface and wherein the first surface of the inner layer is coupled, at least in part, to a portion of the second surface of the shaped dressing bolster; and

wherein the oblique surface of the extremity makes an angle alpha (α) with a normal reference and wherein the angle alpha (α) is in a range between 25 degrees and 65 degrees (65°>α>25°).

15. A dressing assembly for use with a reduced pressure treatment system, the dressing assembly comprising:

a shaped dressing bolster having an oblique extremity and having a first surface and a second, inward-facing surface;

an over-drape disposed over the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster and coupled to a least a portion of the first surface of the shaped dressing bolster and wherein the over-drape extends beyond the shaped dressing bolster to form a drape extension, the drape extension having a first side and a second, inward-facing side;

an adhesive perimeter strip coupled to the second side of the drape extension and operable to provide a seal between a patient and the over-drape; and

an inner layer having a first surface and a second, inward-facing surface and wherein the first surface of the inner layer is coupled, at least in part, to a portion of the second surface of the shaped dressing bolster.

16. The dressing assembly of claim 15 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a medical bolster material shaped to have a trapezoidal cross-section in two orthogonal planes.

17. The dressing assembly of claim 15 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a medical bolster material shaped to have an extremity with a cross-section forming an arcuate portion in two orthogonal planes.

18. The dressing assembly of claim 15 wherein the shaped dressing bolster comprises a medical bolster material shaped to have an elliptical cross-section in two orthogonal planes.

19. A reduced-pressure, force-generating dressing assembly for application on a patient, the dressing assembly comprising:

a directed-force member having an oblique edge for evenly distributing a directed force when placed under reduced-pressure, the directed-force member having a top side and a bottom side;

wherein the oblique edge of the directed-force member forms an angle with a reference line orthogonal to the patient's epidermis that is between 20 and 65 degrees;

wherein the directed-force member is formed from a medical bolster material having a plurality of channels;

a comfort layer coupled to the bottom side of the directed-force member; and

a drape for providing a fluid seal over at least a portion of the directed-force member and a patient's epidermis.

20. The dressing assembly of claim 19 wherein the plurality the plurality of channels are interconnected.

21. The dressing assembly of claim 19 further comprising a comfort layer coupled to the bottom side of the directed-force member.

22. The dressing assembly of claim 19 further comprising a breathable dry layer coupled to the bottom side of the directed-force member.
