Abstract

A coring apparatus that includes a housing that is selectively pivotable in a downhole tool, a rotatable coring bit, a gear drive rotatively coupled to the housing, and a key member configured to engage an inner surface of the gear drive and an outer surface of the coring bit and configured to maintain a rotational relationship between the coring bit and the gear drive. A pinion is rotatively coupled to the housing and configured to engage an outer surface of the gear drive, and a motor is affixed to the housing and operatively coupled to the pinion. The gear drive, the key member, the pinion and the motor are configured to pivot in unison with the housing.

Claims (27)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a first housing selectively pivotable in a downhole tool;

a coring bit;

a gear drive rotatively coupled to the first housing;

a key member configured to engage an inner surface of the gear drive and an outer surface of the coring bit and configured to maintain a rotational relationship between the coring bit and the gear drive;

a pinion rotatively coupled to the first housing and configured to engage an outer surface of the gear drive;

a motor affixed to the first housing and comprising a drive shaft, wherein an outer surface of the drive shaft is configured to engage an inner surface of the pinion, and wherein the gear drive, the key member, the pinion and the motor are configured to pivot in unison with the first housing;

a sleeve spaced apart from the coring bit to form a fluid passageway between an interior of the sleeve and a cutting element of the coring bit, wherein the sleeve comprises a protrusion configured to groove, mark and/or scratch a core sample to indicate an orientation of the core sample relative to a wellbore;

a plurality of alignment rods affixed to the first housing;

a coring bit assembly configured to selectively slide along the alignment rods, wherein:

the coring bit assembly includes the coring bit;

the coring bit is mounted for translative movement in unison with the coring bit assembly; and

the coring bit is rotatively coupled to the coring bit assembly and the first housing;

a plurality of extension link arms collectively having a first end pivotably coupled to the first housing and a second end pivotably coupled to the coring bit assembly;

a first actuator operably coupled to the plurality of extension link arms and configured to longitudinally translate the coring bit;

an axial fluid pump comprising at least one of a spiral groove, a spiral vane or a spiral rib and configured to move a fluid toward a cutting element of the coring bit;

a second actuator;

a second housing;

a rotation link arm having a first end pivotably coupled to the second housing and a second end pivotably coupled to the first housing, the rotation link arm configured to selectively pivot the first housing in response to a position of the second actuator;

a pressure gauge configured to measure a hydraulic pressure associated with the second actuator, wherein an output of the pressure gauge is representative of a sheer force applied to a core sample; and

a linear potentiometer configured to measure a position of the second actuator, wherein an output of the linear potentiometer is representative of a sheer force applied to a core sample;

wherein the downhole tool is configured for conveyance within a borehole in a subterranean formation via at least one of a drillstring or a wireline.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the coring bit assembly is configured to extend the coring bit at least about 2.25 inches into the formation.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the coring bit assembly is configured to extend the coring bit up to about 3 inches into the formation.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the apparatus has an overall diameter of less than about 5.25 inches.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the coring bit is configured to create a coring sample having an outer diameter of at least about 1.0 inches.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the coring bit is configured to create a coring sample having an outer diameter of at least about 1.5 inches.
