Abstract

A spinal implant having a series of sections or units hinged together and a balloon connected to at least some of the sections, the balloon having a curved configuration. The implant has a first delivery configuration and a second curved placement configuration, wherein it has a more linear configuration in the first delivery configuration than in the second curved configuration. The implant assumes the first delivery configuration during delivery to the disc space and maintains the curved configuration after placement within the disc space. The curved configuration can result from filling or expanding the balloon.

Claims (20)

1. A method of minimally invasively inserting a spinal implant in a disc space comprising:

providing a delivery instrument containing the spinal implant in a first configuration, the spinal implant having a plurality of hinged sections and a balloon connected thereto;

inserting the delivery instrument to the disc space;

deploying the implant from the delivery instrument to position the implant in the disc space;

expanding the balloon to maintain the hinged sections in a substantially horseshoe shaped configuration; and

removing the delivery instrument and leaving the implant in place.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a support strip, and the step of deploying the implant enables the support strip to move to a substantially horseshoe shape.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the support strip is composed of a shape memory material and upon deploying the implant from the delivery instrument the support strip moves to its shape memorized substantially horseshoe shaped configuration.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the support strip is delivered in a substantially straightened configuration.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the support strip is between the balloon and the hinged sections.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the hinged sections are positioned between the balloon and the support strip.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of expanding the balloon expands the hinged sections in a direction transverse to a plane of the disc space.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spinal implant is in a substantially straightened configuration in the first configuration.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hinged sections are composed of a shape memory material such that upon deploying the implant from the delivery instrument the hinged sections expand to the horseshoe shaped configuration.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hinged sections are frictionally interlocked during the step of inserting and when left in place.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hinged sections are capable of pivoting and moving laterally with respect to each other when left in place.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the balloon has larger cross-section area remaining outside the hinged sections.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of expanding the balloon expands the balloon so a first section has a first transverse dimension and a second section has a second transverse dimension less than the first transverse dimension.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second section is positioned within an open region in the hinged sections.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first section is positioned outside the hinged section.
