Abstract

A system and method for remote home monitoring and intercom communication. An indicator is received for activating an interactive feature of a telephone. A determination is made whether the indicator authorizes the interactive feature. The audio interface of the telephone is activated.

Claims (51)

1. A method of wireless monitoring comprising:

receiving a telephone call from a subscriber to a home telephone number;

playing a selection prompt to the calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that intercom and monitoring functions are available;

receiving a selection from the calling subscriber;

determining whether the selection is for a monitor feature or an intercom feature;

prompting the calling subscriber for a pass code;

receiving the pass code;

determining whether the pass code is correct;

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the monitor feature, causing a home telephone to play an audible monitor alert; and

entering the home telephone into an off-hook monitoring mode; and

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the intercom feature, causing the home telephone to play an audible intercom alert and entering the home telephone into an off-hook intercom mode.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising

terminating the monitoring or intercom communications when the subscriber enters user input to terminate intercom communications.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein entering the home telephone into an off-hook monitoring mode comprises activating a microphone of the home telephone.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein entering the home telephone into an off-hook intercom mode comprises:

activating a microphone and a speaker of the home telephone.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the steps of receiving a telephone call from a subscriber to a home telephone number are performed by any of a mobile switching center and a local exchange.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a voicemail element performs the wireless monitoring.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

processing a call normally in response to receiving no selection.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising;

switching between the intercom mode and the monitor mode on in response to receiving a key selection.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the key selection is a secondary pass code.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the selection prompt is a sound, vibration, text, or tactile indicator.

11. A monitoring and intercom system, said system comprising:

a function trigger for intercepting an incoming call from a subscriber destined to a home telephone number; and

logic associated with the function trigger, the logic being configured to perform the following steps upon the interception of an incoming call from a subscriber:

play a selection prompt to the calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that intercom and monitoring functions are available;

receive a selection from the calling subscriber;

determine whether the selection is for a monitor feature or an intercom feature;

prompt the calling subscriber for a pass code;

receive the pass code;

determine whether the pass code is correct; and

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the monitor feature, cause a home telephone to play an audible monitor alert and further cause the home telephone to enter into an off-hook monitoring mode; and

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the intercom feature, cause the home telephone to play an audible intercom alert and further cause the home telephone to enter an off-hook intercom mode.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein the monitoring and intercom system further comprises:

a memory for recording a monitored or an intercom communication.

13. The system according to claim 11 , wherein the logic is further configured to process:

the incoming call normally in response to receiving no selection from the calling subscriber.

14. A home communication device configured to provide monitoring and intercom functions, the device comprising:

a processing unit for processing a set of instructions; and

a memory configured to store the set of instructions, wherein the set of instructions provides for the home communications device to:

play a selection prompt to a calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that intercom and monitoring functions are available;

receive a selection from the calling subscriber;

determine whether the selection is for a monitor feature or an intercom feature;

prompt the calling subscriber for a pass code;

receive the pass code;

determine whether the pass code is correct; and

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the monitor feature, cause a home telephone to play an audible monitor alert and further cause the home telephone to enter into an off-hook monitoring mode; and

if the pass code is correct and if the selection is for the intercom feature, cause the home telephone to play an audible intercom alert and further cause the home telephone to enter an off-hook intercom mode.

15. The home communication device according to claim 14 , wherein the home communication device is a voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone.
