Abstract

A vertical alignment liquid crystal layer is sealed between a first substrate having a first electrode and a second substrate having a second electrode, each pixel region has a reflective region and a transmissive region, and a gap adjusting section is provided on one of sides of the first substrate and the second substrate which sets a thickness (gap) d of the liquid crystal layer which controls a phase difference of incident light to the liquid crystal layer so that a gap dr in the reflective region is smaller than a gap dt in the transmissive region. An alignment controller which divides alignment of the liquid crystal within a pixel region is provided in the pixel region on at least one of the sides of the first substrate and the second substrate. It is also possible to optimize by changing the gap in red, green, and blue.

Claims (32)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a plurality of pixels; and

vertical alignment liquid crystal which is sealed between a first substrate having a pixel electrode and a second substrate having a common electrode,

wherein each of the pixels has a shape in which a column direction is longer than a row direction;

each of the pixels is divided into a first pixel region and a second pixel region having different areas by a boundary extending in the row direction and bent in a V shape;

the first pixel region is formed such that an end portion thereof defined by a vertex of the boundary which is bent in a V shape cuts into the second pixel region; and

in the first pixel region, the liquid crystals are aligned toward a first center line in the first pixel region, and in the second pixel region, the liquid crystals are aligned toward a second center line in the second pixel region.

2. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein the vertex of the boundary is located on an extension line of the second center line.

3. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein the first center line and the second center line are orthogonal to each other.

4. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 3 , wherein a preferential viewing angle of the first pixel region is different from a preferential viewing angle of the second pixel region.

5. A liquid crystal display device comprising;

a plurality of pixels; and

vertical alignment liquid crystal which is sealed between a first substrate having pixel electrode and a second substrate having a common electrode,

wherein each of the pixels has a shape in which a column direction is longer than a row direction;

each of the pixels is divided into a first pixel region and a second pixel region having different areas by a boundary extending in the row direction and bent in a V shape;

the first pixel region is formed such that an end portion thereof defined by a vertex of the boundary which is bent in a V shape cuts into the second pixel region;

in the first pixel region, liquid crystal molecules are aligned such that the first pixel region is divided into a plurality of regions defined by a first linear shaped line located at a center of the first pixel region; and

in the second pixel region, liquid crystal molecules are aligned such that the second pixel region is divided into a plurality of regions defined by a second linear shaped line located at a center of the second pixel region.

6. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 5 , wherein the vertex of the boundary is located on an extension line of the second linear shaped line.

7. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 6 , wherein the first linear shaped line and the second linear shaped line are orthogonal to each other.

8. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 7 , wherein

a preferential viewing angle of the first pixel region is different from a preferential viewing angle of the second pixel region.

9. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
