Abstract

A containment pen for finfish aquaculture, comprising a supporting structure, a net attached to the supporting structure and defining a containment volume for containing finfish, wherein the net comprises a plurality of removable net panels, wherein each of the removable net panels comprises a discrete piece of flexible netting attached along its perimeter to one or more substantially rigid members, and wherein the removable net panels are configured to be removable from the containment pen with the piece of flexible netting remaining attached to the substantially rigid members.

Claims (36)

1. A containment pen for finfish aquaculture, comprising:

a geodesic supporting structure,

a net attached to the geodesic supporting structure and defining a containment volume for containing finfish,

wherein the geodesic supporting structure and net are configured to form an enclosure of sufficient size to serve as a containment pen for swimming,

wherein the net comprises a multiplicity of removable net panels,

wherein each of the removable net panels comprises a discrete piece of flexible netting remaining attached to the one or more substantially rigid beams, and

wherein the removable net panels are configured to be removable from the containment pen with the flexible netting remaining attached to the one or more substantially rigid beams,

wherein the multiplicity of net panels provide the supporting structure for a majority of the containment pen,

wherein adjoining net panels are attached by attaching together adjoining beams, and

wherein the panels are shaped so that a beam of one panel extends generally parallel to and adjacent a beam of an adjoining panels.

2. The containment pen of claim 1 , wherein the net panels are in the shape of a polygon.

3. The containment pen of claim 1 , wherein the adjoining net panels are attached together by fasteners extending between the adjoining beams, and wherein the fasteners are removable to permit a panel to be removed from the pen.

4. The containment pen of claim 1 , wherein the panels include one or more triangular panels making up the geodesic structure.

5. The containment pen of claim 1 , wherein the discrete pieces of flexible netting are tensioned generally in a plane defined by the one or more substantially rigid members.

6. The containment pen of claim 1 , further comprising:

flotation members sized to provide neutral buoyancy to the containment pen.

The containment pen of claim 1 , wherein the net panels are configured so that one or more net panels can be removed, leaving an opening in the containment pen, wherein the perimeter of the opening is defined by the beams of net panels that adjoined the one or more net panels that have been removed.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of panels, each panel from the plurality of panels including at least three substantially rigid beams joined to define a polygonal shape, the polygonal shape of each panel from the plurality of panels being configured so that a beam of one panel extends generally parallel to an adjacent beam of an adjoining panel, the plurality of panels configured to form a support structure of an aquaculture containment pen; and

a discrete piece of netting attached along its perimeter to the at least three substantially rigid beams of each panel from the plurality of panels,

at least one panel from the plurality of panels configured to be removed from the aquaculture containment pen with the discrete piece of netting attached to the at least three substantially rigid beams.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the adjoining panels are attached together by fasteners extending between the adjoining beams.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fasteners are removable to permit a panel to be removed from the containment pen.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the discrete piece of netting is flexible.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the discrete piece of netting is tensioned generally in a plane defined by the at least three substantially rigid beams.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the aquaculture containment pen further comprises flotation members configured to provide substantially neutral buoyancy to the containment pen.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the aquaculture containment pen is a geodesic structure.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the polygonal shape is a triangle, the plurality of triangular panels configured to define the geodesic structure.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the after removal of the at least one panel, an opening in the aquaculture containment pen is defined by the beams of the panels that adjoined the at least one panel.

17. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the aquaculture containment pen is configured to be fully submersible.

18. An apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of panels, each panel from the plurality of panels including at least three substantially rigid beams joined to define a polygonal shape, the polygonal shape of the each panel from the plurality of panels being configured so that a beam of one panel extends generally parallel to an adjacent beam of an adjacent panel, the plurality of panels configured to form a substantially geodesic aquaculture containment pen; and

a mesh material coupled along its perimeter to the at least three substantially rigid beams of each panel from the plurality of panels and configured so that at least one panel from the plurality of panels is removable from the aquaculture containment pen with the mesh material attached to the at least three substantially rigid beams.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the aquaculture containment pen is neutrally buoyant.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the substantially rigid beams are made from a material selected to provide neutral buoyancy of the aquaculture containment pen.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the material is high density polyethylene (HDPE).
