Abstract

A patient's pharyngeal wall is treated by inserting an expander member into the airway and positioning an active portion of the expander member in opposition to portions of the pharyngeal wall to be treated. The expander member is activated to urge the wall portions outwardly to an outwardly displaced position. The expander member is then deactivated while leaving the wall portions in the outwardly placed position and the expander member is removed from said airway. A further aspect of the treatment includes stabilization of at least a portion of the pharyngeal wall after compression of portions of the wall.

Claims (8)

1. A stabilizing suture that treats a patient's pharyngeal airway, the suture comprising:

a non-resorbable portion located centrally between first and second resorbable portions, the non-resorbable portion including a non-resorbable suture core, the core being sized so as to be fully recessed behind a pharyngeal wall of the patient's pharyngeal airway in use, the first and second resorbable portions including suture tie-offs extending from each end of the suture core, the suture tie-offs being made entirely of resorbable material.

2. The stabilizing suture of claim 1 , further including an outer coating of resorbable suture material that covers the suture core.

3. The stabilizing suture of claim 1 , wherein the suture core has a length that permits the suture core to be attached to the patient's vertebra.

4. The stabilizing suture of clam 1 , wherein the suture core has a length that permits the suture core to be attached to the patient's bucco-pharyngeal fascia.

5. The stabilizing suture of clam 1 , wherein the suture core has a length that permits the suture core to be attached to the patient's prevertebral fascia.

6. The stabilizing suture of clam 1 , wherein the suture core has a length that permits the suture core to be attached to the patient's anterior longitudinal ligament.

7. The stabilizing suture of claim 1 , wherein the non-resorbable suture core is made of poly ester tetraphthalate.
