Abstract

A line card includes a plurality of subscriber line interface circuits, a plurality of interface lines, and a first overvoltage protector. The subscriber line interface circuits each have a first input terminal operable to receive power at a first positive reference voltage. The interface lines are each coupled to one of the subscriber line interface circuits for interfacing with subscriber lines external to the line card. The first overvoltage protector is coupled to the interface lines and referenced to the first positive reference voltage to provide overvoltage protection responsive to a voltage on at least one of the interface lines exceeding the first positive reference voltage.

Claims (27)

1. A line card, comprising:

a plurality of subscriber line interface circuits each having a first input terminal operable to receive power at a first positive reference voltage and a second input terminal operable to receive power at a second negative reference voltage;

a plurality of interface lines each coupled to one of the subscriber line interface circuits for interfacing with subscriber lines external to the line card;

a shared positive overvoltage protector including a shunting circuit coupled to all of the interface lines and referenced to the first positive reference voltage to provide positive overvoltage protection for all of said plurality of subscriber line interface circuits by shunting all of the interface lines responsive to a voltage on at least one of the interface lines exceeding the first positive reference voltage; and

a plurality of negative overvoltage protectors referenced to the second negative reference voltage, wherein each of the negative overvoltage protectors is coupled to an associated one of the interface lines and is operable to provide negative overvoltage protection responsive to a voltage on the associated interface line exceeding the second negative reference voltage.

2. The line card of claim 1 , wherein the positive overvoltage protector includes a first gate input terminal coupled to receive the first reference voltage, further comprising a first gate capacitor coupled to the first gate input terminal.

3. The line card of claim 1 , wherein the positive overvoltage protector is operable to provide positive overvoltage protection by grounding the interface lines responsive to a voltage on at least one of the interface lines exceeding the first positive reference voltage.

4. The line card of claim 1 , further comprising an isolation diode coupled between each of the interface lines and the positive overvoltage protector.

5. The line card of claim 1 , wherein the positive overvoltage protector includes a first gate input terminal coupled to receive the first positive reference voltage and the negative overvoltage protectors each include a second gate input terminal coupled to receive the second negative reference voltage, further comprising:

a first gate capacitor coupled to the first gate input terminal; and

a plurality of second gate capacitors, each coupled to one of the second gate input terminals.

6. The line card of claim 1 , wherein the positive overvoltage protector is operable to provide positive overvoltage protection by grounding the interface lines responsive to a voltage on at least one of the interface lines exceeding the first positive reference voltage, and the negative overvoltage protectors are each operable to provide negative overvoltage protection by grounding its associated interface line responsive to a voltage on the associated interface lines exceeding the second negative reference voltage.

7. A protection circuit, comprising:

a first terminal operable to receive a first positive reference voltage;

a second terminal operable to receive a second negative reference voltage;

a plurality of interface lines each for interfacing with external subscriber lines;

a first shared positive overvoltage protector including a shunting circuit coupled to all of the interface lines and referenced to the first positive reference voltage to provide positive overvoltage protection for said plurality of interface lines by shunting all of the interface lines responsive to a voltage on at least one of the interface lines exceeding the first positive reference voltage;

a plurality of second negative overvoltage protectors, each coupled to an associated one of the interface lines and referenced to the second negative reference voltage to provide negative overvoltage protection responsive to a voltage on the associated interface line exceeding the second negative reference voltage.

8. The protection circuit of claim 7 , wherein the first shared positive overvoltage protector includes a first gate input terminal coupled to receive the first positive reference voltage and the second negative overvoltage protectors each include a second gate input terminal coupled to receive the second negative reference voltage, further comprising:

a first gate capacitor coupled to the first gate input terminal; and

a plurality of second gate capacitors, each coupled to one of the second gate input terminals.

9. The protection circuit of claim 7 , further comprising an isolation diode coupled between each of the interface lines and the first shared positive overvoltage protector.

10. A method for protecting a line card including a plurality of interface lines for interfacing with external subscriber lines, comprising:

monitoring a voltage on the plurality of interface lines;

coupling all of the interface lines to ground using a shared positive overvoltage protector including a shunting circuit coupled to the plurality of interface lines responsive to determining that the voltage on any one of the interface lines exceeds a first positive reference voltage;

providing a plurality of negative overvoltage protectors, each coupled to one of the interface lines; and

coupling a selected interface line to ground using the negative overvoltage protector coupled to the selected interface line responsive to determining that the voltage on the selected interface line exceeds a second negative reference voltage.
