Abstract

A device for desynchronizing neuronal brain activity involving a neuron population firing in a synchronized manner at a pathological frequency. The device includes an electrode configured to generate stimuli that stimulate the neuron population; and a control unit configured to control the electrode to generate the stimuli in sequence, wherein the stimuli succeed each other with a predetermined frequency f. The predetermined frequency f is substantially equal to g×n/m, where g is the pathological frequency, and n and m are integers.

Claims (16)

1. A device for desynchronizing neuronal brain activity involving a neuron population firing in a synchronized manner at a pathological frequency, the device comprising:

a plurality of electrodes configured to stimulate a plurality of neuron subpopulations, respectively, of the neuron population, wherein each electrode of the plurality of electrodes is configured to deliver a burst of electrical pulse(s) to reset the respective neuron subpopulation, and wherein at least one of the plurality of electrodes, which is not positioned in the respective neuron subpopulation, is configured to deliver a burst of electrical pulse(s) to at least one of a neuron subpopulation and a fiber bundle that is coupled to the respective neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized; and

a control unit configured to control the plurality of electrodes to generate the respective bursts of electrical pulses in sequence having a predetermined time shift between each of the bursts in the sequence such that each respective neuron subpopulation is reset at a different point in time and fires out of phase with the other subpopulations,

wherein the predetermined time shift is substantially equal to 1/fN,

wherein f is the pathological frequency and N is the number of the plurality of electrodes,

wherein the at least one of the plurality of electrodes, which is not positioned in the neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized, generates the respective burst earlier than a point in time determined by the predetermined time shift of 1/fN, and

wherein the predetermined time shift of 1/fN is reduced by a conduction time needed for the burst to be delivered from the stimulated neuron subpopulation or fiber bundle to the neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein each burst includes 1 to 20 pulses.

3. A method of desynchronizing neuronal brain activity involving a neuron population firing in a synchronized manner at a pathological frequency, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of electrodes for stimulating a plurality of neuron subpopulations, respectively, of the neuron population, wherein each electrode of the plurality of electrodes generates a burst of electrical pulses to reset the respective neuron subpopulation, and wherein at least one of the plurality of electrodes, which is not positioned in the respective neuron subpopulation, is configured to deliver a burst of electrical pulses to at least one of a neuron subpopulation and a fiber bundle that is coupled to the respective neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized;

controlling the plurality of electrodes to generate the respective bursts of electrical pulses in sequence having a time shift between each of the bursts in the sequence such that each respective neuron subpopulation is reset at a different point in time and fires out of phase with the other subpopulations; and

predetermining the time shift to substantially equal 1/fN,

wherein f is the pathological frequency and N is the number of the plurality of electrodes,

wherein the at least one of the plurality of electrodes, which is not positioned in the neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized, generates the respective burst earlier than a point in time determined by the time shift of 1/fN, and

wherein the time shift of 1/fN is reduced by a conduction time needed for the burst to be delivered from the stimulated neuron subpopulation or fiber bundle to the neuron subpopulation to be desynchronized.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein each burst includes 1 to 20 pulses.
