Abstract

Various aspects of the present subject matter relate to an implantable device. Various device embodiments comprise at least one port to connect to at least one lead with at least electrode, stimulation circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide at least one neural stimulation therapy to at least one neural stimulation target using the at least one electrode, sensing circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide a sensed signal, and a controller connected to the stimulation circuitry to provide the at least one neural stimulation therapy and to the sensing circuitry to receive the sensed signal. In response to a triggering event, the controller is adapted to switch between at least two modes. Other aspects and embodiments are provided herein.

Claims (35)

1. An implantable device, comprising:

at least one port to connect to at least one lead with at least one electrode;

stimulation circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide at least one neural stimulation therapy to at least one neural stimulation target using the at least one electrode;

sensing circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide a sensed signal;

and

a controller connected to the stimulation circuitry to provide the at least one neural stimulation therapy and to the sensing circuitry, wherein in response to an automatic or patient-actuated triggering event the controller is adapted to switch between at least two modes selected from the group consisting of:

a closed-loop neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided using the sensed signal;

an open-loop neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided without using the sensed signal; and

a sensing mode for performing sensing processes using the sensing circuitry, wherein the controller is adapted to disable the neural stimulation therapy from being delivered in the closed-loop or open-loop neural stimulation modes when the controller is operating in the sensing mode, further comprising a timer operationally connected to the controller, wherein the controller and the timer are adapted to cooperate to follow a circadian rhythm in switching modes.

2. An implantable device, comprising:

at least one port to connect to at least one lead with at least one electrode;

stimulation circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide at least one neural stimulation therapy to at least one neural stimulation target using the at least one electrode;

sensing circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide a sensed signal; and

a controller connected to the stimulation circuitry to provide the at least one neural stimulation therapy and to the sensing circuitry, wherein in response to an automatic or patient-actuated triggering event the controller is adapted to switch between a closed-loop neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided using the sensed signal, and an open-loop neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided without using the sensed signal.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the triggering event includes the automatic trigger.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the automatic trigger is based on a detected device change.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the automatic trigger is based on an environmental change.

6. The device of claim 3 , wherein the automatic trigger is based on a detected physiologic change.

7. The device of claim 3 , wherein the automatic trigger is based on a timer.

8. The device of claim 2 , further comprising a timer operationally connected to the controller, wherein the controller and the timer are adapted to cooperate to follow a circadian rhythm in switching modes.

9. The device of claim 2 , wherein the triggering event includes the patient-actuated trigger.

10. An implantable device, comprising:

at least one port to connect to at least one lead with at least one electrode;

stimulation circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide at least one neural stimulation therapy to at least one neural stimulation target using the at least one electrode;

sensing circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide a sensed signal;

and

a controller connected to the stimulation circuitry to provide the at least one neural stimulation therapy and to the sensing circuitry, wherein in response to an automatic or patient-actuated triggering event the controller is adapted to switch between a neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided, and a sensing mode for performing sensing processes using the sensing circuitry, wherein the controller is adapted to disable the neural stimulation therapy from being delivered when the controller is operating in the sensing mode, further comprising a timer operationally connected to the controller, wherein the controller and the timer are adapted to cooperate to follow a circadian rhythm in switching modes.

11. An implantable device, comprising:

at least one port to connect to at least one lead with at least one electrode;

stimulation circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide at least one neural stimulation therapy to at least one neural stimulation target using the at least one electrode;

sensing circuitry connected to the at least one port and adapted to provide a sensed signal; and

a controller connected to the stimulation circuitry to provide the at least one neural stimulation therapy and to the sensing circuitry, wherein in response to an automatic or patient-actuated triggering event the controller is adapted to switch between an open-loop neural stimulation mode in which the neural stimulation therapy is provided without using the sensed signal, and a sensing mode for performing sensing processes using the sensing circuitry, wherein the controller is adapted to disable the neural stimulation therapy from being delivered when the controller is operating in the sensing mode.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the triggering event includes the automatic trigger.
