Abstract

Disclosed are hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus, subterranean hydrocarbon recovery drilling methods, and subterranean hydrocarbon recovery methods. In one embodiment, a hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus includes an elongated assembly within which a rotatable drill rod is received. The assembly comprises a longitudinal axis, a drill rod entrance end, and a drill rod exit end. The assembly comprises a tailcuttings diverter pipe proximate the drill rod exit end, with the tailcuttings diverter pipe defining an initial fluid flow path of the tailcuttings from the longitudinal axis which is acute from the longitudinal axis. Other apparatus and method aspects are contemplated.

Claims (42)

1. A hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus, comprising:

an elongated assembly within which a rotatable drill rod is received; and

the assembly comprising a non-rotating brush construction received about the drill rod, the brush construction having a plurality of brush bristles extending radially inward in contact with the rotatable drill rod, the brush bristles comprising a plurality of rings of brush bristles spaced from one another along a longitudinal axis, a spacer ring received between adjacent pairs of the spaced brush bristle rings.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the plurality of rings number at least five.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the brush construction comprises:

a brush housing which encircles the drill rod; and

the rings being removably received by the brush housing.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the rings are slidably received by the brush housing for insertion and removal along the longitudinal axis.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein there are at least five ring members.

6. A hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus, comprising:

an elongated assembly within which a rotatable drill rod is received, the assembly comprising a longitudinal axis; and

the assembly comprising a non-rotating brush construction received about the drill rod, the brush construction having a plurality of brush bristles extending radially inward in contact with the rotatable drill rod, the brush construction comprising:

a brush housing which encircles the drill rod; and

at least five ring members to which the brush bristles connect and from which the brush bristles extend radial inward to the rotatable drill rod, the at least five ring members being removably received by the brush housing, the at least five ring members being slidably received by the brush housing for insertion and removal along the longitudinal axis, a spacer ring received between adjacent pairs of the ring members to space brush bristles extending from adjacent ring members from one another.

7. A hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus, comprising:

an elongated assembly within which a rotatable drill rod is received; and

the assembly comprising a non-rotating brush construction received about the drill rod, the brush construction having a plurality of brush bristles extending radially inward in contact with the rotatable drill rod, the assembly comprising a non-metallic drill rod retainer portion encircling the drill rod adjacent the brush bristles to limit radial drill rod movement adjacent the brush bristles.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the non-metallic drill rod retainer portion is received within six inches along the longitudinal axis of where at least some of the brush bristles contact the rotatable drill rod.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the non-metallic drill rod retainer portion is received within two inches along the longitudinal axis of where at least some of the brush bristles contact the rotatable drill rod.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 comprising an elastomeric seal between the drill rod retainer portion and the brush construction.

11. A subterranean hydrocarbon recovery drilling method, comprising:

within a subterranean room, drilling into a hydrocarbon deposit at an initial angle which is from horizontal to upward vertical using an elongated assembly within which a rotating drill rod is received;

flowing tailcuttings from the drilling within the assembly rearwardly along the rotating drill rod; and

contacting the rotating drill rod with brush bristles which encircle the rotating drill rod to block at least some of the rearwardly flowing tailcuttings from flowing rearwardly of the brush bristles along the rotating drill rod.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the contacting comprises limiting radial drill rod movement adjacent the brush bristles with a non-metallic drill rod retainer portion encircling the drill rod adjacent the brush bristles.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the contacting comprises limiting radial drill rod movement adjacent the brush bristles with a non-metallic drill rod retainer portion encircling the drill rod adjacent the brush bristles downstream relative to tailcuttings flow of the brush bristles.

14. A subterranean hydrocarbon recovery method, comprising:

within a subterranean room, drilling into a hydrocarbon deposit at an initial angle which is from horizontal to upward vertical using an elongated assembly within which a rotating drill rod is received; the drilling forming a well bore that extends into the hydrocarbon deposit from the subterranean room;

flowing tailcuttings from the drilling within the assembly rearwardly along the rotating drill rod;

contacting the rotating drill rod with brush bristles which encircle the rotating drill rod to block at least some of the rearwardly flowing tailcuttings from flowing rearwardly of the brush bristles along the rotating drill rod; and

after the drilling, removing the drill rod from the well bore and flowing hydrocarbon from the deposit into the subterranean room.

15. A hydrocarbon recovery drill string apparatus, comprising:

an elongated assembly within which a rotatable drill rod is received;

the assembly comprising a non-rotating brush construction received about the drill rod, the brush construction having a plurality of brush bristles extending radially inward in contact with the rotatable drill rod; and

the assembly comprising an elastomeric seal received about the drill rod in contact with the brush construction.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the elastomeric seal has a maximum diameter which is greater than that of the brush bristles.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the brush construction comprises a housing which encircles the drill rod, the housing comprising part of a hammer union.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the elastomeric seal contacts the housing and is received within the hammer union.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 comprising a non-metallic drill rod retainer portion encircling the drill rod within the hammer union adjacent the brush bristles to limit radial drill rod movement adjacent the brush bristles, the elastomeric seal being longitudinally between the brush construction and the non-metallic drill rod retainer portion.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the elastomeric seal has a maximum diameter which is greater than that of the brush bristles.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the elastomeric seal has a maximum diameter which is greater than that of the non-metallic drill rod retainer portion.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein the elastomeric seal has a maximum diameter which is greater than that of the brush bristles.
