Abstract

A method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in the agricultural-water canal provides a controlled delivery of calcium hypochlorite particles to the surface of water by entraining calcium hypochlorite particles in an air stream and then propelling the calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream at high velocity to the surface of the water, whereat the calcium hypochlorite particles are released from the air stream. A device for implementing the method is also disclosed. The device includes a gas blower, a feed hopper and a port which is adapted to direct and propel the biocide-laden gaseous stream to the surface of water in the agricultural-water canal.

Claims (13)

1. A method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal comprising the steps of:

feeding calcium hypochlorite particles having a particle size of less than 1 mm to an air stream to form a calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream; and

then embedding said calcium hypochlorite particles in said organic debris in said water by propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to the surface of said water in said agricultural-water canal at a linear velocity of from 40 to 180 miles per hour.

2. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein said embedding of said calcium hypochlorite particles in said organic debris in said water provides a sufficiently consistent distribution of said biocide particles across said surface of said water.

3. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein said surface of said water is at least partially covered with floating organic debris, and wherein, in said step of propelling calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, a biologically-remedial amount of said calcium hypochlorite is embedded in said floating organic debris.

4. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein said surface of said water is at least partially covered with a target area of floating organic debris and wherein, in said step of propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said embedding of said calcium hypochlorite particles is at least partially targeted whereby a higher concentration of calcium hypochlorite particles is delivered to said target area.

5. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein, in said step of feeding calcium hypochlorite particles to an air stream to form a calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream and in said step of embedding said calcium hypochlorite particles in said organic debris in said water by propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said calcium hypochlorite particles, after said embedding, are partially consumed in the decomposition of said organic debris and unconsumed calcium hypochlorite dissipates to benign byproducts.

6. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein, in said step of propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream is propelled to said surface of said water simultaneously from a plurality of ports.

7. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein, in said step of propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream is propelled to said surface of said water simultaneously from a plurality of ports disposed overhead of said surface of said water.

8. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein, in said step of propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream is propelled to said surface of said water simultaneously at a plurality of angles from a plurality of ports disposed overhead of said surface of said water.

9. The method of treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 wherein, in said step of propelling said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream to said surface of said water, said calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream is propelled to said surface of said water simultaneously from a plurality of ports disposed overhead of said surface of said water while said ports are being translated along said agricultural-water canal.

10. The method for treating an agricultural-water canal to decompose organic debris in said agricultural-water canal according to claim 1 , wherein said calcium hypochlorite particles have a particle size distribution, further including, prior to the step of feeding calcium hypochlorite particles having a particle size of less than 1 mm to said air stream to form a calcium hypochlorite-laden air stream, the step of:

reducing and narrowing said particle size distribution of said calcium hypochlorite.
