Abstract

A method of determining whether a query can be redirected to an alternate evaluator in a directory system. The method includes the step of determining in any order, any one or a combination of: Availability of an alternate evaluator, First parameters of the query, Second parameters of the alternate evaluator, Third parameters which are pre-determined criteria.

Claims (48)

1. A method for handling a query in a directory system, comprising:

determining availability of an alternate evaluator operable to process directory operations, the alternate evaluator having a first storage device comprising a cache preloaded with one or more directory entries selected from a directory server having a second storage device, the alternate evaluator being configured to evaluate the query based on the one or more directory entries preloaded in the first storage device without accessing the directory server;

determining one or more first parameters associated with the query;

determining one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator;

determining if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator; and

forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining one or more third parameters comprising predetermined criteria governing use of the alternate evaluator;

determining if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters; and

wherein forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing comprises forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more third parameters comprise at least one of system policies, query origin, operating conditions and administrative thresholds.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise a type parameter comprising a read, compare, list or search, add or modify function.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise a complexity parameter based on a number of terms of a filter associated with the query.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise an operand parameter.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator comprise at least one of a type parameter, a complexity parameter and an operand parameter.

8. A system for handling a query in a directory system, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable medium;

a program of instructions encoded on the computer-readable medium, the program of instructions, when executed on a processor, operable to:

determine availability of an alternate evaluator operable to process directory operations, the alternate evaluator having a first storage device comprising a cache preloaded with one or more directory entries selected from a directory server having a second storage device, the alternate evaluator being configured to evaluate the query based on the one or more directory entries preloaded in the first storage device without accessing the directory server;

determine one or more first parameters associated with the query;

determine one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator; and

determine if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator; and

a switch coupled to the processor and operable to forward the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein: the processor is further operable to: determine one or more third parameters comprising predetermined criteria governing use of the alternate evaluator; and determine if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters; and a switch operable to forward the query to the alternate evaluator for processing comprises a switch operable to forward the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more third parameters comprise at least one of system policies, query origin, operating conditions and administrative thresholds.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise a type parameter comprising a read, compare, list or search, add or modify function.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise a complexity parameter based on a number of terms of a filter associated with the query.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more first parameters associated with the query comprise an operand parameter.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator comprise at least one of a type parameter, a complexity parameter and an operand parameter.

15. A system for handling a query in a directory system, comprising:

means for determining availability of an alternate evaluator operable to process directory operations, the alternate evaluator having a first storage device comprising a cache preloaded with one or more directory entries selected from a directory server having a second storage device, the alternate evaluator being configured to evaluate the query based on the one or more directory entries preloaded in the first storage device without accessing the directory server;

means for determining one or more first parameters associated with the query;

means for determining one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator;

means for determining if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator; and

means for forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if at least one of the first parameters associated with the query is supported by at least one of the second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising: means for determining one or more third parameters comprising predetermined criteria governing use of the alternate evaluator; means for determining if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters; and wherein means for forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing comprises means for forwarding the query to the alternate evaluator for processing if the one or more first parameters are supported by the one or more third parameters.

17. Logic embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer readable medium comprising code operable to:

determine availability of an alternate evaluator operable to process directory operations, the alternate evaluator having a first storage device comprising a cache preloaded with one or more directory entries selected from a directory server having a second storage device, the alternate evaluator being configured to evaluate the query based on the one or more directory entries preloaded in the first storage device without accessing the directory server;

determine one or more first parameters associated with the query;

determine one or more second parameters associated with the alternate evaluator;
