Abstract

Embodiments contemplate methods and devices for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium. An ultrasound echo wave may be received at a first transducer element of a transducer array in a handheld probe. The ultrasound echo wave may also be received at a second transducer element of the transducer array. The ultrasound echo wave may also be received at a third transducer element of the transducer array. The handheld probe may process into digital data the ultrasound echo wave received at the first transducer element and the ultrasound echo wave received at the second transducer element. The processing may preclude data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the third transducer element from being included in the digital data. The processing may include reducing the digital data and the reduced digital data may be transmitted to a location relatively remote from the handheld probe.

Claims (45)

1. A method for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium, comprising:

receiving an ultrasound echo wave at a first transducer element of a transducer array in a handheld probe of an ultrasound system;

receiving the ultrasound echo wave at a second transducer element of the transducer array in the handheld probe of the ultrasound system;

receiving the ultrasound echo wave at a third transducer element of the transducer array in the handheld probe of the ultrasound system;

converting the received ultrasound echo waves into digital data;

processing into digital data the ultrasound echo wave received at the first transducer element and the ultrasound echo wave received at the second transducer element, the processing precluding data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the third transducer element from being included in the digital data, and the processing including reducing the digital data without beamforming data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the first transducer element with data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the second transducer element; and

transmitting the digital data to a location relatively remote from the handheld probe.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises restricting the digital data to an area in a region of interest.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises resampling from a first sampling rate to a second sampling rate, the second sampling rate being lower than the first sampling rate.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises clutter filtering.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data varies with a distance traveled by the ultrasound echo wave.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data is based on an amplitude of the ultrasound echo wave.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises a mapping from a first data value to a second data value.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second data value has fewer bits than the first data value.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the mapping varies across a data frame.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data is based on achieving a target dynamic range.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data reduces a quality of an image formed from the digital data.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data substantially maintains a quality of an image formed from the digital data.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data is based on a rate of transmission of the digital data.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises translating the ultrasound echo wave to baseband data.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing the digital data comprises at least one of the following: filtering, quantization, frequency translation, data compression, clipping, dynamic range transfer, or domain transform.

16. A device for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium, the device being a handheld probe of an ultrasound system, the device comprising:

a transducer array, the transducer array configured, at least in part, to:

receive an ultrasound echo wave at a first transducer element of the transducer array;

receive the ultrasound echo wave at a second transducer element of the transducer array; and

receive the ultrasound echo wave at a third transducer element of the transducer array;

a converter to convert the received ultrasound echoes into digital data;

a processor, the processor configured, at least in part, to:

process into digital data the ultrasound echo wave received at the first transducer element and the ultrasound echo wave received at the second transducer element, the processing precluding data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the third transducer element from being included in the digital data, and the processing including reducing the digital data without beamforming data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the first transducer element with data representative of the ultrasound echo wave received at the second transducer element; and

a transmitter, the transmitter configured, at least in part, to:

transmit the digital data to a location relatively remote from the handheld probe.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data comprises restricting the digital data to an area in a region of interest.

18. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data comprises resampling from a first sampling rate to a second sampling rate, the second sampling rate being lower than the first sampling rate.

19. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data comprises clutter filtering.

20. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data varies with a distance traveled by the ultrasound echo wave.

21. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data is based on an amplitude of the ultrasound echo wave.

22. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data comprises a mapping from a first data value to a second data value.

23. The device of claim 22 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the second data value has fewer bits than the first data value.

24. The device of claim 22 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the mapping varies across a data frame.

25. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data is based on achieving a target dynamic range.

26. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data reduces a quality of an image formed from the digital data.

27. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data substantially maintains a quality of an image formed from the digital data.

28. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data is based on a rate of transmission of the digital data.

29. The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured such that the reducing the digital data comprises translating the ultrasound echo wave to baseband data.
