Abstract

An anchoring system includes a simply-structured device which permits a portion of a catheter tube or similar medical article to be easily anchored to a patient, desirably without the use of tape or needles and suturing. A unitary retainer desirably includes a base connected to a cover by way of a flexible hinge. The retainer is attached to a flexible anchor pad including an adhesive bottom surface, which can be attached to the patient's skin. A catheter is secured to a fitting, which in turn mounts to the retainer. Mounting the fitting to the retainer can be accomplished by inserting posts of the retainer through holes of the fitting, or by mounting the fitting within a channel defined by mounting structures integral to the retainer. The cover is then positioned over the base, by bending the flexible hinge, and latched to the base. Several embodiments of the latching mechanism are disclosed. In one form, the latching mechanism includes one or more posts on the base which can be releasably locked into corresponding slotted holes in the cover.

Claims (14)

1. A retainer for attaching a medical article to a patient, the retainer comprising:

a base;

at least four posts, each post extending from the base, the posts being arranged at an equal distance relative to a center point so as to define a generally rectangular shape, each post having an enlarged head at an end distal of the base;

at least two walls that are spaced apart from each other so as to receive a portion of the medical article between the walls, the walls being non-parallel along a longitudinal axis and contacting the portion of the medical article so as to inhibit longitudinal movement of the medical article relative to the retainer; and

a cover being movable relative to the base from a closed position in which at least a portion of the cover is disposed beneath at least one of the enlarged heads and an open position, the cover including at least four apertures, each aperture receiving a corresponding one of the enlarged heads.

2. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the posts extend generally perpendicularly from the base.

3. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the walls have convex inner surfaces.

4. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the cover is coupled to the base by a flexible coupling.

5. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the cover is smaller than the base.

6. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the cover has a width sufficient to stabilize at least a section of the medical article located within the retainer.

7. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the four posts comprises a shaft and a radial extension, the shaft being configured to engage with the medical article and the radial extension engaging with a cover surface when the cover is in the closed position.

8. A retainer according to claim 1 , wherein the cover has length in a lateral direction sufficient to extend at least between two of the four posts.

9. A retainer according to claim 1 further comprising an adhesive layer coupled to the retainer and adapted to adhesively secure the retainer to the body of a patient.

10. A retainer according to claim 9 further comprising a flexible anchor interposed between the retainer and the adhesive layer.
