Abstract

An anastomosis device has first and second components which each having first and second parts. The first and second components are magnetically attracted to one another. The device forms a throughhole when in use. The first parts of the first and second components are positioned radially outward from the second parts relative to the longitudinal axis with the first parts of the first and second components contacting one another and being magnetically attracted to one another. The second parts of the first and second components also being magnetically attracted to one another and are separated by the vessel walls.

Claims (25)

1. An anastomotic device comprising:

a first component; and

a second component magnetically attracted to the first component, the first and second components forming a throughhole to provide fluid communication between a first vessel and a second vessel, the throughhole having a longitudinal axis;

the first component having a first part and a second part, wherein the first part is positionable outside the first vessel and the second part is positionable within the first vessel, the first and second parts being configured to compress a wall of the first vessel between the first and second parts, the first part being forced toward the second part in a first direction;

the second component being magnetically attracted to the first component in a second direction in order to couple the first and second components, wherein the first and second directions are generally non-parallel.

2. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second parts of the first component are magnetically attracted to one another along the first direction.

3. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second directions are transverse and form an angle of at least about 45 degrees.

4. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second directions are substantially perpendicular to one another.

5. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first direction extends radially from the longitudinal axis of the throughhole formed by the first and second anastomotic components.

6. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second parts of the first components is made of at least two portions.

7. The anastomotic device of claim 6 , wherein the two portions are separate and unconnected.

8. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the second anastomotic component also has a first part and a second part, the first and second parts being configured to compress a wall of the second vessel.

9. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , further comprising:

means for mechanically coupling together the first and second components.

10. The anastomotic device of claim 9 , wherein:

the coupling means includes suture holders for holding a suture extending between the first and second components.

11. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

at least one of the first and second parts of the first component has a protrusion and the other of the first and second parts has a recess to compress and hold the first vessel.

12. The anastomotic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first part has a curved surface and the second part has a curved surface positioned opposite the curved surface of the first part to compress the first vessel.
