Abstract

A tool includes a nonmagnetic tool housing, a cylindrical rotor inside the tool housing and rotatable in response to a flow of pressurized fluid through the tool housing and magnets mounted in the rotor. A stator is positioned on the exterior of the tool housing, and is dimensioned to cooperate with the magnets to, upon rotation of the rotor, generate electrical current for supply to a load. The stator includes an inductor core having opposing ends connected by a middle portion, and a coil wound around the middle portion, where both the inductor core and coil are configured to be arced between the opposing ends about the axis of rotation of the rotor, and the inductor core is configured to provide a consistent gap between the face of the inductor core and the face of each magnet while each magnet is being rotated between positions proximal the opposing ends, the inductor core having a length to enable its opposing ends to each be simultaneously radially aligned with a respective magnet in the rotor to complete a magnetic circuit through the inductor core. The tool also includes a power conditioner receiving the generated electrical current and conditioning the current to be acceptable for supply to a load that comprises one or more logic processing devices.

Claims (41)

1. A tool comprising:

a nonmagnetic tool housing;

a cylindrical rotor inside the tool housing and rotatable in response to a flow of pressurized fluid through the tool housing;

magnets mounted in the rotor;

a stator on the exterior of the tool housing, the stator dimensioned to cooperate with the magnets to, upon rotation of the rotor, generate electrical current for supply to a load,

wherein the stator comprises:

an inductor core having opposing ends connected by a middle portion;

a coil wound around the middle portion,

where both the inductor core and coil are configured to be arced between the opposing ends about the axis of rotation of the rotor, and the inductor core is configured to provide a consistent gap between the face of the inductor core and the face of each magnet while each magnet is being rotated between positions proximal the opposing ends, the inductor core having a length to enable its opposing ends to each be simultaneously radially aligned with a respective magnet in the rotor to complete a magnetic circuit through the inductor core; and

a power conditioner receiving the generated electrical current and conditioning the current to be acceptable for supply to a load that comprises one or more logic processing devices.

2. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the power conditioner conditions the received AC current to produce a supply power having a voltage of up to about 5 Volts DC at 1.0 ampere.

3. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the power conditioner comprises a Schottky diode bridge for converting the received AC current into unconditioned DC, a ripple suppression subcircuit for filtering out AC components from the unconditioned DC, and a linear regulating device for producing the supply power from the filtered, unconditioned DC.

4. The tool of claim 3 , wherein the linear regulating device comprises a transistor network.

5. The tool of claim 4 , wherein the transistor network provides a feedback loop for sensing an output voltage and comparing the output voltage to an internal reference voltage thereby to control switching of the transistors for controlling the output voltage.

6. The tool of claim 5 , wherein the output voltage is controlled by the automatic switching in and switching out of resistance in the transistor network.

7. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the conditioned power is supplied to a power storage device for powering a luminaire.

8. The tool of claim 7 , wherein the power storage device is one or more of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) and a supercapacitor.

9. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the magnets are spaced generally uniformly about the circumference of the rotor.

10. The tool of claim 9 , wherein there are four magnets.

11. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the magnets are rare earth magnets.

12. The tool of claim 11 , wherein the magnets are formed of one of Neodymium-Iron-Boron and Samarium-Cobalt.

13. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the magnets are coated with a corrosion-resistant material.

14. The tool of claim 13 , wherein the corrosion-resistant material is one of an epoxy, a catalytic automotive epoxy sealant, zinc chromate and epoxy-chromate.

15. The tool of claim 10 , wherein each of the magnets is dimensioned to complement and be securely retained within grooves in the circumference of the rotor.

16. The tool of claim 15 , wherein each of the magnets has a generally dovetail shape and is received within a respective dovetail groove in the rotor.

17. The tool of claim 16 , wherein each of the magnets is adhered in its respective groove with bonding adhesive.

18. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the inductor core is comprised of magnetically saturable electrical steel.

19. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the load is a light source.

20. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the inductor core is I-shaped.

21. A tool cover for receiving the tool of claim 1 , the tool cover supporting and aligning an inductor element of the stator with the magnets of the rotor within the tool housing, the inductor element comprising the inductor core and the coil, the tool cover also supporting a circuit to which the inductor element is electrically connected, the circuit comprising the power conditioner.

22. A cover for the tool of claim 1 , the cover comprising:

a body dimensioned to receive the tool housing of the tool and to permit access to an actuating lever on the tool housing;

the stator in the body adjacent to the tool housing; and

the power conditioner in the body.

23. A cover for the tool of claim 1 , the cover comprising:

a body dimensioned to receive the tool housing of the tool and to permit access to an actuating lever on the tool housing;

the body having a surface area for receiving a flexible conductive substrate to form a printed circuit;

a cavity in the body adjacent to the tool housing, the cavity dimensioned to receive the stator and the power conditioner.
