Abstract

A dynamic A-MSDU enabling method is disclosed. The method enables the recipient of an aggregate MAC service data unit (A-MSDU) under a block ACK agreement to reject the A-MSDU. The method thus distinguishes between A-MSDU outside of the block ACK agreement, which is mandatory, from A-MSDU under the block ACK agreement, which is optional. The method thus complies with the IEEE 802.11n specification while enabling the recipient to intelligently allocate memory during block ACK operations.

Claims (33)

1. A machine-readable non-transitory storage device including instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

transmitting an add block acknowledge (ADDBA) request to a recipient, the ADDBA request being transmitted in an ADDBA request frame that includes an aggregate media access control (MAC) service data unit (A-MSDU) supported field and a buffer size field;

receiving an ADDBA response in an ADDBA response frame from the recipient, the ADDBA response frame including the A-MSDU supported field and the buffer size field with recipient responses to the ADDBA request; and

selecting an aggregate MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU) transmission characteristic in response to the recipient responses.

2. The machine-readable non-transitory storage device of claim 1 , wherein the operations include transmitting an A-MPDU in accordance with the A-MPDU transmission characteristic.

3. The machine-readable non-transitory storage device of claim 1 , wherein selecting the A-MPDU transmission characteristic includes:

determining a recipient buffer characteristic from the recipient responses; and

basing the A-MPDU transmission characteristic on the recipient butter characteristic.

4. The machine-readable non-transitory storage device of claim 3 , wherein the recipient buffer characteristic is a buffer size.

5. The machine-readable non-transitory storage device of claim 4 , wherein the buffer characteristic is a total size of recipient buffers.

6. The machine-readable non-transitory storage device of claim 1 , wherein selecting the A-MPDU characteristic includes increasing the A-MPDU characteristic according to a field in ADDBA response.

7. A method comprising:

transmitting an add block acknowledge (ADDBA) request to a recipient, the ADDBA request being transmitted in an ADDBA request frame that includes an aggregate media access control (MAC) service data unit (A-MSDU) supported field and a buffer size field;

receiving an ADDBA response in an ADDBA response frame from the recipient; the ADDBA response frame including the A-MSDU supported field and the buffer size field with recipient responses to the ADDBA request; and

selecting an aggregate MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU) transmission characteristic in response to the recipient responses.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising transmitting an A-MPDU in accordance with the A-MPDU transmission characteristic.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein selecting the A-MPDU transmission characteristic includes:

determining a recipient buffer characteristic from the recipient responses; and

basing the A-MPDU transmission characteristic on the recipient buffer characteristic.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the recipient buffer characteristic is a buffer size.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the buffer characteristic is a total size of recipient buffers.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein selecting the A-MPDU characteristic includes increasing the A-MPDU characteristic according to a field in ADDBA response.

13. A wireless station (STA) comprising a plurality of hardware elements configured to:

transmit an add block acknowledge (ADDBA) request to a recipient, the ADDBA request being transmitted in an ADDBA request frame that includes including an aggregate media access control (MAC) service data unit (A-MSDU) supported field and a buffer size field;

receive an ADDBA response in an ADDBA response frame from the recipient, the ADDBA response frame including the A-MSDU supported field and the buffer size field with recipient responses to the ADDBA request; and

select an aggregate MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU) transmission characteristic in response to the recipient responses.

14. The STA of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of hardware elements are configured to transmit an A-MPDU in accordance with the A-MPDU transmission characteristic.

15. The STA of claim 13 , wherein to select the A-MPDU transmission characteristic includes the plurality of hardware elements configured to:

determine a recipient buffer characteristic from the recipient responses; and

base the A-MPDU transmission characteristic on the recipient buffer characteristic.

16. The STA of claim 15 , wherein the recipient buffer characteristic is a buffer size.

17. The STA of claim 16 , wherein the buffer characteristic is a total size of recipient buffers.

18. The STA of claim 13 , wherein to select the A-MPDU characteristic includes increasing the A-MPDU characteristic according to a field in ADDBA response.
