Abstract

According to the proposed method, the frequency of power control commands transmitted on a power control channel is changed according to the traffic. When the traffic becomes slower in at least one direction due to a DTX state, a slower transfer rate, asymmetric data transfer or for any other reason, the frequency of power control commands is lowered. Both the base station and the personal station may lower the frequency of the commands which they send. An alternative to changing the frequency of power control commands is to change the energy of power control bits. The duration of power control bits must hereby be extended, if a standard bit error ration is desired. If the system is frequency-divided and/or time-divided and uses frequency control command of several bits, the length of the command word may be shortened in addition to or as an alternative to the change in frequency. The power control algorithm may be changed several times during a traffic connection.

Claims (58)

1. A base station for having a radio connection with a personal station and for controlling transmission of power control commands in a digital radio link, said base station configured to:

identify an absence of data transmissions being received from said personal station;

determine a base station frequency of transmission of a base station power control command and a personal station frequency of transmission of a personal station power control command based on said absence of data transmissions;

negotiate with said personal station to change said personal station frequency of transmission of said personal station power control command; and

transmit said base station power control command to said personal station in accordance with said base station frequency of transmission.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the identifying is based on reception of a request from said personal station to change transmission between said personal station and said base station.

3. A base station for having a radio connection with a personal station and for controlling transmission of power control commands in a digital radio link, said base station configured to:

receive a request from said personal station to change transmission between said personal station and said base station;

determine a base station frequency of transmission of a base station power control command and a personal station frequency of transmission of a personal station power control command based upon said request;

negotiate with said personal station to change said personal station frequency of transmission of said personal station power control command; and

transmit said base station power control command to said personal station in accordance with said base station frequency of transmission.

4. A base station for having a radio connection with a personal station and for controlling transmission of power control commands in a digital radio link, said base station configured to:

receive a request from said personal station to change transmission between said personal station and said base station;

determine a base station frequency of transmission of a base station power control command and a personal station frequency of transmission of a personal station power control command in response to said request;

send said personal station frequency of transmission of said personal station power control command to said personal station; and

transmit said base station power control command to said personal station in accordance with said base station frequency of transmission.

5. An apparatus comprising:

at least one memory including computer program code; and

at least one processor,

wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to

identify, at a first station having a radio connection with a second station, an absence of data transmissions being received from said second station;

determine a first station frequency of transmission of a first station power control command and a second station frequency of transmission of a second station power control command based on said absence of data transmissions;

negotiate with said second station to change said second station frequency of transmission of said second station power control command; and

cause transmission of said first station power control command to said second station in accordance with said second station frequency of transmission.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the first station comprises a base station and the second station comprises a personal station.

7. An apparatus for a first station comprising:

at least one memory including computer program code; and

at least one processor,

wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to

process a request from a second station to change transmission between said second station and said first station;

determine a first station frequency of transmission of a first station power control command and a second station frequency of transmission of a second station power control command based upon said request;

negotiate with said second station to change said second station frequency of transmission of said second station power control command; and

transmit said first station power control command to said second station in accordance with said first station frequency of transmission.

8. An apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the first station comprises a base station and the second station comprises a personal station.

9. An apparatus for a first station comprising:

at least one memory including computer program code; and

at least one processor,

wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to

process a request from a second station to change transmission between said second station and said first station;

determine a first station frequency of transmission of a first station power control command and a second station frequency of transmission of a second station power control command in response to said request;

cause sending of said second station frequency of transmission of said second station power control command to said second station; and

transmit said first station power control command to said second station in accordance with said first station frequency of transmission.

10. An apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the first station comprises a base station and the second station comprises a personal station.

11. A computer-readable medium encoded with instruction that, when executed on a computer, perform a process, the process comprising:

identifying, at a first station having a radio connection with a second station, an absence of data transmissions being received from said second station;

determining a first station frequency of transmission of a first station power control command and a second station frequency of transmission of a second station power control command based on said absence of data transmissions;

negotiating with said second station to change said second station frequency of transmission of said second station power control command; and

transmitting said first station power control command to said second station in accordance with said first station frequency of transmission.
