Abstract

Methods for allocating and choosing dedicated signatures for random access are provided. Options for allocating dedicated signatures include allocating the dedicated signature from the unused space of the random signature root index when there is unused space and allocating more dedicated signatures from the same root index using the same time/frequency resources if additional signatures are needed, and reserving some preambles from the contention-based random access preambles from both sets of preambles. The present invention also proposes that the dedicated signatures be reserved in each of two sets of preambles.

Claims (52)

1. A method of requesting a random access connection between a wireless mobile terminal and a base station, the method comprising:

the mobile terminal receiving information comprising at least one signature root sequence index, a cyclic shift parameter and a dedicated signature parameter, the dedicated signature parameter being associated with a contention-free signature;

the mobile terminal generating a contention-based signature or the contention-free signature; and

the mobile terminal transmitting at least one of the contention-free signature or the contention-based signature for random access,

wherein the contention-based signature is recognized based on the at least one signature root sequence index and the cyclic shift parameter,

wherein the contention-free signature is recognized based on the dedicated signature parameter,

wherein the contention-based signature is associated with a first signature set and the contention-free signature is associated with a second signature set.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dividing contiguously arranged indices between the first and second signature sets.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a number of contention-based signatures in the first signature set is NRset1 =ceil((Nset1)/64*(Nr-Nunused)); and

a number of contention-based signatures in the second signature set is Nrset2 =Nr-NRset1-Nunused,

wherein:

Nr is a total number of signatures that can be reserved among 64 contention-based random access signatures;

Nset1 is a number of signatures in the first signature set;

Nset2 is a number of signatures in the second signature set; and

Nunused is a number of signatures that are not used as root sequences.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contention-based signature or the contention-free signature associated with Zadoff-Chu signatures.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving at least two dedicated signature identifiers; and

selecting one of the at least two dedicated signature identifiers according to an amount of data for transmission,

wherein at least one of the at least two dedicated signature identifiers is associated with the first signature set and the other of the at least two dedicated signature identifiers is associated with the second signature set.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least two dedicated signature identifiers are received during a handover procedure.

7. A mobile terminal for requesting a random access connection with a base station, the mobile terminal comprising:

a transmitting unit configured to transmit information;

a receiving unit configured to receive information;

a display unit configured to display information;

an input unit configured to receive inputs from a user; and

a processing unit configured to:

process the received information comprising at least one signature root sequence index, a cyclic shift parameter, and a dedicated signature parameter,

generate a contention-free signature or a contention-based signature, and

transmit the contention-free signature or the contention-based signature for random access,

wherein the dedicated signature parameter being associated with a contention-free signature;

wherein the contention-based signature being recognized based on the at least one signature root sequence index and the cyclic shift parameter,

wherein the contention-free signature being recognized based on the dedicated signature parameter, and

wherein the contention-based signature being associated with a first signature set and the contention-free signature being associated with a second signature set.

8. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the processing unit divides contiguously arranged indices between the first and second signature sets.

9. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the contention-based signature or the contention-free signature is associated with Zadoff-Chu signatures.

10. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the dedicated signature parameter is received during a handover procedure.

11. A method of requesting a random access connection in a wireless mobile terminal, the method comprising:

the mobile terminal receiving information comprising at least one signature root sequence index, a cyclic shift parameter, and a dedicated signature parameter;

the mobile terminal recognizing at least the contention-free signature or a contention-based signature; and

the mobile terminal transmitting at least the contention-free signature or the contention-based signature for random access,

wherein the dedicated signature parameter being associated with a contention-free signature,

wherein the contention-based signature is recognized based on the at least one signature root sequence index and the cyclic shift parameter,

wherein the contention-free signature is recognized based on the dedicated signature parameter, and

wherein the contention-based signature is associated with a first signature set and the contention-free signature is associated with a second signature set.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dividing contiguously arranged indices between the first and second signature sets.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the contention-based signature or the contention-free signature associated with Zadoff-Chu signatures.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the dedicated signature parameter is received during a handover procedure.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signature set corresponds to a first transport format and the second signature set corresponds to a second transport format.

16. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the first signature set corresponds to a first transport format and the second signature set corresponds to a second transport format.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first signature set corresponds to a first transport format and the second signature set corresponds to a second transport format.
