Abstract

The invention relates to an implantable stomach prosthesis for surgically replacing or augmenting all or part of the antrum and/or pylorus of a stomach. The prosthesis controls the passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine. The prosthesis may be configured to churn ingested material and release it from the stomach through a prosthetic pyloric valve. At least one expandable member is arranged to be expanded to control the passage of food and/or to mimic the churning action of a patient's stomach. The prosthesis includes an outer support structure, a flexible inner member forming a conduit for the movement of material, and at least one expandable member located between the outer support structure and inner member. An implantable pump system is provided for inflating and deflating the expandable member(s).

Claims (24)

1. An implantable digestive prothesis comprising a prostheric pyloric valve configured for moving ingested materials through a portion of the digestive tract, the prosthetic pyloric valve comprising:

an outer support structure;

at least one expandable member located within the outer support structure;

a flexible inner member forming a conduit configured for the movement of the ingested material therethrough, the flexible inner member located within the outer support structure, wherein the at least one expandable member is located between the inner member and the outer support structure;

a pump system comprising a pump;

an input port coupled to the pump and the at least one expandable member; and

wherein the pump is configured to pump an inflation medium into the at least one expandable member through a corresponding input port to expand the at least one expandable member.

2. The implantable prosthetic pyloric valve of claim 1 , wherein the pump system is implantable.

3. The implantable prosthetic pyloric valve of claim 1 , further comprising a controller operatively coupled to the pump system and configured to control inflation and deflation of the at least one expandable member.

4. An implantable prosthetic stomach comprising:

an outer support structure;

at least one expandable member located within the outer support structure;

a flexible inner member forming a cavity configured for the churning of ingested material therein, the flexible inner member located within the outer support structure, wherein the at least one expandable member is located between the inner member and the outer support structure;

an antrum portion having an orad end portion configured for receiving ingested materials and an aborad end portion configured to be coupled to a recipient's pylorus, the antrum portion including a plurality of expandable members located between the outer support structure and the inner member, the expandable members configured to expand and contract in a sequence to churn the ingested material;

an implantable pump system including a pump; and

an input port coupled to the pump and the expandable member; wherein the implantable pump system is configured to pump an inflation medium into each of the expandable members through a corresponding input port to expand the at least one expandable member.

5. The implantable prosthetic organ of claim 4 , further comprising a controller operatively coupled to the pump system and configured to control inflation and deflation of the at least one expandable member.

6. An implantable prosthetic digestive organ configured for moving materials through a portion of the digestive tract, the implantable prosthetic digestive organ comprising:

a prosthetic pyloric valve means for controlling the passage of material between a stomach and small intestine of a recipient;

an outer support means for supporting the prosthetic digestive organ;

expandable means configured for controlling the tightening and relaxing of the valve means;

a flexible inner member means for providing a conduit for the movement of ingested material therethrough, the flexible inner member means located within the outer member; and

wherein the expandable means is located between the inner member means and the outer support means; and

a pumping means for pumping an inflation medium into the expandable means to expand the expandable means.
