Abstract

Highly compactable granulations and methods for preparing highly compactable granulations are disclosed. More particularly, highly compactable calcium carbonate granulations are disclosed. The granulations comprise powdered materials such as calcium carbonate that have small median particle sizes. The disclosed granulations are useful in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical tableting and provide smaller tablet sizes upon compression than previously available.

Claims (30)

1. A calcium carbonate granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting comprising: USP or food grade calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter from about 6 μm to about 12 μm and a binder, said granulation being highly compactable, having a tap density between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 , being free flowing and having sufficient cohesive properties for compression into tablets.

2. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein the median particle diameter of said calcium carbonate powder is from about 6 μm to about 10 μm.

3. The granulation of claim 2 , wherein the median particle diameter is about 6 μm.

4. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.

5. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein said binder comprises maltodextrin.

6. The granulation of claim 5 , wherein said granulation comprises between about 2% and about 10% said maltodextrin by weight.

7. The granulation of claim 6 , wherein said granulation comprises about 5% said maltodextrin by weight.

8. The granulation of claim 5 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.

9. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between about 1.1 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

10. A calcium carbonate granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting comprising: USP or food grade calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter from about 6 μm to about 12 μm and about 5% by weight maltodextrin, said granulation being highly compactable, having a tap density between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 , being free flowing and having sufficient cohesive properties for compression into tablets.

11. The granulation of claim 10 , wherein the median particle diameter of said calcium carbonate powder is from about 6 μm to about 10 μm.

12. The granulation of claim 11 , wherein the median particle diameter is about 6 μm.

13. The granulation of claim 10 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.

14. The granulation of claim 10 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.

15. The granulation of claim 10 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between about 1.1 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

16. A calcium carbonate granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting comprising: USP or food grade calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter from about 6 μm to about 12 μm and a binder, said granulation having a tap density between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 , and being highly compactable for compression into tablets.

17. The granulation of claim 16 , wherein the median particle diameter of said calcium carbonate powder is from about 6 μm to about 10 μm.

18. The granulation of claim 17 , wherein the median particle diameter is about 6 μm.

19. The granulation of claim 16 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.

20. The granulation of claim 16 , wherein said binder comprises maltodextrin.

21. The granulation of claim 20 , wherein said granulation comprises between about 2% and about 10% said maltodextrin by weight.

22. The granulation of claim 21 , wherein said granulation comprises about 5% said maltodextrin by weight.

23. The granulation of claim 20 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.

24. The granulation of claim 16 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between about 1.1 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .

25. A calcium carbonate granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting comprising: USP or food grade calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter from about 6 μm to about 12 μm and about 5% by weight maltodextrin, said granulation having a tap density between about 1.0 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 , and being highly compactable for compression into tablets.

26. The granulation of claim 25 , wherein the median particle diameter of said calcium carbonate powder is from about 6 μm to about 10 μm.

27. The granulation of claim 26 , wherein the median particle diameter is about 6 μm.

28. The granulation of claim 25 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.

29. The granulation of claim 25 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.

30. The granulation of claim 25 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between about 1.1 and about 2.0 g/cm 3 .
