Abstract

A multiphase electromagnetic machine may be controlled by controlling currents in one or more phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine. A control system may be used to determine how much current to deliver to, or extract from, each phase. The control system may use an objective function, subject to one or more constraints, to determine the current. The control system may use position information to determine the objective function, constraints, or both.

Claims (42)

1. A system for controlling a multiphase electromagnetic machine, the system comprising:

processing equipment configured to determine desired currents to apply to respective phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine; and

a power subsystem coupled to the processing equipment and configured to conduct currents to be applied to respective phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine and to conduct a virtual phase current to be applied to a virtual phase, wherein the currents and the virtual phase current sum to substantially zero.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sum of the currents is a non-zero current.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the phases and the virtual phase are coupled in a wye configuration.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the virtual phase comprises an electrical resistance;

the phases comprise respective electrical resistances; and

the electrical resistance of the virtual phase is less than any of the electrical resistances of the phases.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing equipment is further configured to determine a desired virtual phase current and the power subsystem is further configured to conduct the virtual phase current based on the desired virtual phase current.

6. A method for controlling a multiphase electromagnetic machine, the method comprising:

determining desired currents to respectively apply to phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine;

conducting respective currents to be applied to the phases based on the desired currents;

determining a desired virtual phase current; and

conducting a virtual phase current to be applied to a virtual phase based on the desired virtual phase current.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the sum of the desired currents is a non-zero current.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining the desired virtual phase current comprises determining the sum of the desired currents.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining the desired currents and determining the desired virtual phase current occurs substantially simultaneously.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the desired currents and the desired virtual phase current sum to substantially zero.

11. A system for controlling a multiphase electromagnetic machine, the system comprising:

a power subsystem; and

processing equipment coupled to the power subsystem and configured to:

identify at least one phase of multiple phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine as being undesired or unavailable,

adjust one or more constraints associated with the at least one phase, and

determine desired respective currents to apply to the multiple phases by the power subsystem based on the adjusted one or more constraint of the at least one phase.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing equipment is further configured to reduce an allowable current for the at least one phase.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing equipment is further configured to constrain an allowable current for the at least one phase to zero.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the power subsystem is configured to conduct a virtual phase current to be applied to a virtual phase; and

the processing equipment is further configured to determine a desired virtual phase current.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing equipment is further configured to adjust a desired force or a desired torque generated by one or more of the phases.

16. A method for controlling a multiphase electromagnetic machine, the method comprising:

identifying at least one phase of the multiphase electromagnetic machine as being undesired or unavailable;

adjusting one or more constraints associated with the at least one phase independent of constraints of other phases;

determining, using processing equipment, desired currents to apply to respective phases of the multiphase electromagnetic machine by the power subsystem based on the adjusted one or more constraints; and

applying respective currents to the phases based on the desired currents.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein adjusting the one or more constraints comprises reducing the allowable current for the at least one phase.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein adjusting the one or more constraints comprises constraining the allowable current for the at least one phase to zero.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

determining a desired virtual phase current corresponding to a virtual phase; and

conducting a virtual phase current to be applied to the virtual phase based on the desired virtual phase current.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein adjusting the one or more constraints comprises adjusting a desired force or a desired torque generated by one or more of the phases.
