Abstract

A storage system according to one embodiment includes a first storage tier; a second storage tier; logic for storing instances of a file in the first storage tier and the second storage tier; logic for receiving a request to access the file or instance thereof from a user in a group of users; logic for providing the user requesting access to the file with remote access to an instance of the file on the first storage tier that is not being used by any other user in the group of users; logic for setting an ownership status of the instance of the file on the first storage tier to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and logic for setting an ownership status of an unused instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned or owned by a second user which previously owned the instance of the file on the first storage tier. Additional systems, methods, and computer program products are also presented.

Claims (79)

1. A storage system, comprising:

a first storage tier;

a second storage tier;

logic configured for storing instances of a file in the first storage tier and the second storage tier;

logic configured for receiving a request to access the file or instance thereof from a user in a group of users;

logic configured for providing the user requesting access to the file with remote access to an instance of the file on the first storage tier that is not being used by any other user in the group of users;

logic configured for setting an ownership status of the instance of the file on the first storage tier to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and

logic configured for setting an ownership status of an unused instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned or owned by a second user which previously owned the instance of the file on the first storage tier,

wherein the instances of the file on the first and second storage tiers exist simultaneously.

2. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the file and instances thereof include video data from a broadcast.

3. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first storage tier includes at least one random access storage medium, and wherein the second storage tier includes at least one sequential access storage medium.

4. The storage system as recited in claim 3 , wherein the at least one sequential access storage medium is a magnetic tape medium.

5. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

logic for associating each user in the group of users with a unique user identifier and storing the association in a first index;

logic for associating each instance of the file on the storage system with a unique user in the group of users via the unique user identifiers and storing the association in a second index; and

logic for associating each instance of the file on the storage system to one usage status related to usage of the instance of the file and storing the association in a third index.

6. The storage system as recited in claim 5 , wherein the first index, the second index, and the third index are markup language index files.

7. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , further comprising logic for creating the instance of the file on the first storage tier by copying a second instance of the file from the first storage tier.

8. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , further comprising logic for creating the instance of the file on the first storage tier by copying an instance of the file from a second storage tier to the first storage tier.

9. The storage system as recited in claim 1 , wherein any instance of the file is capable of being owned by no more than one user at a time.

10. A method, comprising:

receiving a request to access a file or instance thereof from a user in a group of users;

providing the user requesting access to the file with remote access to an instance of the file on a first storage tier of a storage system that is not being used by any other user in the group of users;

setting an ownership status of the instance of the file on the first storage tier to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and

setting an ownership status of an instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned or owned by a user which previously owned the instance of the file on the first storage tier,

wherein the instances of the file on the first and second storage tiers exist simultaneously.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 , further comprising:

associating each user in the group of users with a unique user identifier and storing the association in a first index;

associating each instance of the file on the storage system with a unique user in the group of users via the unique user identifiers and storing the association in a second index; and

associating each instance of the file on the storage system to one usage status related to usage of the instance of the file and storing the association in a third index.

12. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the file and instances thereof include video data from a broadcast.

13. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the first storage tier includes at least one random access storage medium, and wherein the second storage tier includes at least one sequential access storage medium.

14. A computer program product for managing a storage system, the computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising:

computer readable program code configured to receive a request to access a file or instance thereof from a user in a group of users;

computer readable program code configured to provide the user requesting access to the file with remote access to an instance of the file on a first storage tier of a storage system that is not being used by any other user in the group of users;

computer readable program code configured to set an ownership status of the instance of the file on the first storage tier to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and

computer readable program code configured to set an ownership status of an unused instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned or owned by a user which previously owned the instance of the file on the first storage tier,

wherein the instances on the first and second storage tiers exist simultaneously.

15. A storage system, comprising:

a first storage tier;

a second storage tier;

logic configured for receiving a request to access a file or instance thereof from a user, wherein the user is associated with an instance of the file on the second storage tier;

logic configured for determining a usage status of each instance of the file on the first storage tier, wherein the usage status includes used and unused;

logic configured for providing the user requesting access to the file with remote access to an instance of the file on the first storage tier having a usage status of unused;

logic configured for transferring an ownership status of the unused instance of the file on the first storage tier from owned by a prior user of the unused instance of the file to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and

logic configured for setting an ownership status of an instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned or owned by a second user which previously owned the instance of the file on the first storage tier,

wherein the instances of the file on the first and second storage tiers exist simultaneously.

16. The storage system as recited in claim 15 , further comprising:

logic for transferring an ownership status of the instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to owned by the prior user,

wherein any instance of the file is capable of being owned by no more than one user at a time.

17. The storage system as recited in claim 15 , further comprising:

logic for setting an ownership status of the instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned,

wherein any instance of the file is capable of being owned by no more than one user at a time.

18. The storage system as recited in claim 15 , further comprising:

associating each user in the group of users with a unique user identifier and storing the association in a first index;

associating each instance of the file on the storage system with a unique user in the group of users via the unique user identifiers and storing the association in a second index; and

associating each instance of the file on the storage system to one usage status related to usage of the instance of the file and storing the association in a third index.

19. The storage system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the file and instances thereof include video data from a broadcast.

20. The storage system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the first storage tier includes at least one random access storage medium, and wherein the second storage tier includes at least one sequential access storage medium.

21. A storage system, comprising:

a first storage tier;

a second storage tier;

logic configured for determining a usage status of each instance of a file on a first storage tier of a storage system, wherein the usage status includes used and unused;

logic configured for receiving a request to access the file or instance thereof from a user, wherein the user is associated with an instance of the file on the second storage tier;

logic configured for creating an unused instance of the file on the first storage tier of the storage system;

logic configured for providing the user requesting access to the file with remote access to the unused instance of the file or portion thereof on the first storage tier of the storage system;

logic for setting an ownership status of the unused instance of the file on the first storage tier to owned by the user requesting access to the file; and

logic for setting an ownership status of the instance of the file on the second storage tier from owned by the user requesting access to the file to unowned,

wherein the instances of the file on the first and second storage tiers exist simultaneously.

22. The storage system as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:

wherein any instance of the file is capable of being owned by no more than one user at a time,

wherein the unused instance of the file on the first storage tier is created by copying a used instance of the file on the first storage tier.

23. The storage system as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:

associating each user in the group of users with a unique user identifier and storing the association in a first index;

associating each instance of the file on the storage system with a unique user in the group of users via the unique user identifiers and storing the association in a second index; and

associating each instance of the file on the storage system to one usage status related to usage of the instance of the file and storing the association in a third index.

24. The storage system as recited in claim 21 , wherein the file and instances thereof include video data from a broadcast.

25. The storage system as recited in claim 21 , wherein the first storage tier includes at least one random access storage medium, and wherein the second storage tier includes at least one sequential access storage medium.
