Crosslinked fibers and method of making same by extrusion
View Patent ↗The present disclosure relates to a method of forming fibers. First and second precursors, each possessing a core and at least one functional group known to have click reactivity, are mixed. The mixed precursors are then extruded under heat to cross-link during fiber production.
1. A method for forming fibers comprising:
obtaining a mixture by mixing first and second precursors each possessing a core and at least one functional group known to have click reactivity; and
extruding said mixture under heat to crosslink the first and second precursors without the use of chemical crosslinking agent or catalyst to produce a fiber;
wherein the cores of said first and second precursors are selected from chitin and chitosan.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, for each of said first and second precursors, the functional group known to have click reactivity is selected from the group consisting in amine, sulfate, thiol, hydroxyl, azide, alkyne, alkene, and carboxyl groups.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the functional group of the first precursor is an azide and the functional group of the second precursor is an alkyne.
4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the functional group of the first precursor is a thiol and the functional group of the second precursor is an alkene.
5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the mixture is spun from anisotropic solution of chitin or chitosan.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the functional group of the first precursor has click reactivity with the functional group of the second precursor.
7. A fiber formed by the method of claim 1 .
