Abstract

In order to efficiently utilize the limited transmission bandwidth of a communications network, e.g., a cable network, guide data for constructing an interactive program guide (IPG) is delivered to a set-top terminal using different methodologies. For example, the guide data associated with those programs which are likely of interest to a user is automatically provided piecemeal in a broadcast stream. The set-top terminal, along with other terminals, may retrieve from such a broadcast stream some or all of the guide data therein over time, which is cached in the terminal in anticipation of a user's invocation of an IPG. On the other hand, the guide data associated with those programs which are less likely of interest to a user is furnished upon request by the set-top terminal needing such guide data to realize an IPG desired by the user. In addition, guide data for each program may be divided into detail guide data providing details of the program (e.g., a synopsis of the program content), and grid guide data providing basic information about the program (e.g., title, channel and broadcast time). A first time window and a second time window may be defined such that the grid guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the first time window and the detail guide data associated with those programs broadcast within the second time window are automatically provided in the broadcast stream. The rest of the detail and grid guide data may be furnished upon request when needed.

Claims (66)

1. A system for providing program guide information, comprising:

a mechanism for defining a first period of time associated with a first data object providing information about a program delivered through a communications network and a second period of time associated with a second data object providing additional information about said program, the first data object containing grid guide information, and the second data object containing detailed guide information;

a device for broadcasting the first data object multiple times during said first period of time, said first period of time being relative to a delivery time of the program, and for broadcasting the second data object over the communications network during the second period of time, said second period of time being smaller than said first period of time and occurring within said first period of time, said first data object being broadcast at least once during said second period of time; and

a server for providing the first data object upon request therefore if the delivery time of the program is outside the first period of time but within a third period of time, and for providing the second data object upon request therefore if the delivery time of the program is outside the second period of time but within the third period of period.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the communications network includes a two-way multichannel communications network.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein said device for broadcasting is configured to broadcast, in addition to said first data object and said second data object a third data object, said third data object being a catalog including information identifying other catalogs available from a broadcast file stream which includes said third data object.

4. The system of claim 3 ,

wherein said first data object is an element of a grid guide catalog available from said broadcast file stream; and

wherein said second data object is an element of a detailed guide catalog available from said broadcast file stream.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein said device for broadcasting is further configured to broadcast, as part of said catalog including information identifying other catalogs:

start and end times of said first period of time; and

start and end times of said second period of time.

6. The system of claim 5 ,

wherein said start and end times of said first period of time are grid carousel start and grid carousel stop times, respectively;

wherein said start and end times of the second period of time are detailed carousel start and stop times, respectively; and

wherein said device for broadcasting is further configured to broadcast, as part of said catalog including information identifying other catalogs:

start and stop times of said third period of time, said start and stop times of said third period of time being catalog start and stop times.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein said device for broadcasting is further configured to broadcast, as part of said catalog, a catalog type, a catalog ID and a catalog version.

8. The system of claim 7 ,

wherein said catalog including information identifying other catalogs also includes path information indicating a path of a directory including strings which are referenced by multiple different catalogs included in said broadcast file stream;

wherein said device for broadcasting is a broadcast file server; and

wherein said server is a guide data server.

9. The system of claim 1 ,

wherein said first period of time is a grid program guide data broadcast time period; and

wherein said second period of time is a detailed program guide broadcast time period.

10. The system of claim 9 ,

wherein said third period of time is a total guide data window time period; and

wherein said server is configured not to provide said first data object and not to provide said second data object outside said third period of time.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein said second data object is broadcast at least twice during said second period of time and said first data object is transmitted at least three times during said first period of time.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein said second period of time is a multi-day time period including a day in which said program is to be delivered and at least one additional day.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein said first period of time is at least a three day period.

14. A method of providing program guide information, the method comprising:

defining a first period of time associated with a first data object providing information about a program being delivered through a communications network and a second period of time associated with a second data object providing additional information about said program, the first data object containing grid guide information, and the second data object containing detailed guide information;

broadcasting the first data object over the communications network multiple times during the first period of time, said first period of time being a period of time relative to the delivery time of said program;

broadcasting the second data object over the communications network during said second period of time, said second period of time being smaller than said first period of time and occurring within said first period of time, said first data object being broadcast at least once during said second period of time, the delivery time of said program being with said first and second periods of time; and

responding to requests for the first data object during a third period of time by providing said first data object, and

responding to requests for the second data object during the third period of time by providing said second data object.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the communications network includes a two-way multichannel communications network;

wherein broadcasting the first data object and broadcasting the second data object includes operating a broadcast file server to broadcast said first and second objects;

wherein responding to request for said first data object includes operating a guide data server to provide said first data object;

wherein responding to request for said second data object includes operating the guide data server to provide said second data object; and

wherein the method further comprises:

broadcasting, in addition to said first data object and said second data object a third data object, said third data object being a catalog including information identifying other catalogs available from a broadcast file stream which includes said third data object; and

operating the guide data server not to provide said first and second data objects outside said third period of time.

16. The method of claim 15 ,

wherein said first data object is an element of a grid guide catalog available from said broadcast file stream;

wherein said second data object is an element of a detail guide catalog available from said broadcast file stream;

wherein said first period of time is a grid program guide data broadcast time period; and

wherein said second period of time is a detailed program guide broadcast time period.

17. The method of claim 16 ,
